Hi Jeeva, Do you still own the sierra? I just loved it. If you don't mind, request you to share across the contact details of your mechanic. That would be of great help.

Re: Tata Sierra Turbo: Queries

It would be really helpful if anyone in this group can answer the below query.
Was there any change in dashboard for 2001 model Sierra Turbo? I had owned a 1998 one Turbo and see that the dashboard is markedly different. Also the power window switch was different.

I wanted to know if the dashboard has been modified by the previous owner (either accident or just for looks). This will help me decide if I should buy this or not.

Also, I would be grateful if someone who is aware of the changes done in later models can help me identify those changes so that I can check for them too!

I have attached some interior photos of one Sierra which is available for sale. This is a 2001 model (yet to verify the RC book).

Re: Tata Sierra Turbo: Queries

Came across an interesting article on Sierra in Business Standard from 2004. Thought it might be of interest here.

Knock knock..!!!
Any Sierra owners here
Half a decade since this thread went into "total radio silence".
If anyone still drives the beast, pls share your "long term" ownership reviews.

Such tanks on wheels are not built anymore. Hope few die hard fans are still enjoying the "armoured ride"!!

Re: Tata Sierra Turbo: Queries

Seems like obituary has been written for all the Sierra's out there.
It's unfortunate that in India we do not have a culture of vehicle restoration unlike US/GB where post rebuild car is made roadworthy and passes all the necessary tests.
Here it's a rare sight to find 25-30 yr old car in "perfect" running condition.
Sierra was one such vehicle which was perfect for a nice restoration, plonked with a new refined engine (easily available in Kurla/Mayapuri type heavens) complete with GB n ECU. Being a chassis mounted body shell, engine fitment shouldn't be a problem. Now with CNG as an alternative cheaper fuel (RTO endorsement is not a problem), it makes more sense to restore such old gems back to their glory.
Regards,.
Aazam.

PS: More than 25 year old vehicles, if running on greener fuels (CNG/LPG), fitness and re-registration wouldn't be a problem.

Re: Tata Sierra Turbo: Queries

Hello fellow BHPians,

I recently had the fortune of getting a drive in a well-restored Sierra turbo.
Everything in the vehicle just worked like a charm but I could notice a lot of horizontal movement in the vehicle once it breached the speeds of 60-65KMPH. It held its line really well but felt really unstable on the inside due to the motion further transferring to the occupants.

Is this normal in the case of a Sierra or could be a one-off issue with the particular unit I got the opportunity to be a passenger in?

Any bit of information regarding this would be helpful as I hope to buy a Sierra turbo when the opportunity arises.

Re: Tata Sierra Turbo: Queries

Question for folks who still own the Sierra:

At the basic level, the Sierra would be running as a 483DL engine + G-76 gearbox combo. These numbers are the same as used on the IDI version of the Sumo/Sumo Victa. How is the maintenance ? If anything requires replacement, do you find it easy or difficult ? (I am not referring to the Sierra specific bits like the body parts etc).

I don’t have a Sierra, but I do have a dead Tata Estate. Did some research about parts. The Tata Sumo/Estate/Sierra/Telcoline have the same service parts (all filters), same radiator, same clutch plate, same front suspension, similar brake boosters (they look exactly the same, but could be different), same brake shoes, cylinders etc. The engine parts like heater plugs, piston rings, engine mounts etc. are also shared. In fact, most mechanical parts would be labelled “Sumo/Sierra/Estate” on boxes or on online listings.

Thanks, Sanidhya. That gives some hope.

I spoke to my mechanic at TASS, who said that though the nomenclature (483Dl / G-76) is same, there are differences between the parts in the Sierra group vs Sumo Victa setup.

I will have more info soon on the one I am looking for.

Btw, what's the story about the Estate ? Any plans to revive it ?

If you need a contact for Sierra specific cosmetic and interior parts, let me know. I have a contact who can arrange quite a few things.

Yes, the Victa does have some engine related hardware differences, probably because of the emission norm updates it kept getting. The power output is also marginally higher in the Victa ( 70. Vs. 68). Still, some of these parts are common to all these cars.

If you need Sierra specific body and interior parts, let me know. I have found a contact who can help source quite a few things.

My Estate has had a rather sad life. It was an excellent car, extensively being used for touring between 1993-2003. It’s been to Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, U.P, Haryana, Chandigarh and of course, Delhi. But the Engine seized in 2007 due to being driven without coolant. Sat abandoned for 7 years and was subsequently repaired in 2014 for being donated to an NGO that needed a car, but it broke down again in early 2015. Has been sitting idle ever since then. I have now taken it upon myself to bring it back on the road, but I have no idea where to begin. The body is falling apart, interiors don’t exist anymore, wires have all been eaten away by rats and needless to say, it has tonnes of mechanical issues. I have started with buying the rare parts like tail lights, wheel covers, badges, logos etc., but the mechanical aspects are yet to be explored. If all goes well, I plan to try and start it next month. It is likely to be a really time and money consuming affair:

Hi, The work is still going on. The amount of rust on this car is mind boggling. The tinkering process is the only bottle neck; once that is done, it’s all about assembling the car, something that shouldn’t take more than an month.

Have sent you a PM regarding the contact details.

If no one else has picked yet, up I am interested!

And, btw. I have a spare front bumper for NA version. I was told that this would not fit the Turbo and hence is left with me.
