Getting smells from outside in the car

Hello Friends,

Since last few days I have noticed that even if I am driving with all the windo glasses rolled up,I am getting smells from outside in my car.

This I strongly noticed when day before yesterday I passed a spot where some people were burning garbage.Though my window glasses were closed,I got a strong burning smell inside the car.My AC was off and so the blower fan.

This has started happening recently and never happened in last more than 3.5 years since I bought the car.BTW it is SWIFT-VXI.

Please let me know what can be the reasons.

Thanks and Regards,

Is the vent position to outside air. If yes then you will get outside air even if blower is off.
If you get smell with vent position to inside air, it means the flap is faulty

Spot on Sir ! You just took the words out of my mouth and typed them on your keyboard !

In case the above is checked and found correct (unlikely), you may then check the door linings for the rubber seals being cut, damaged or worn out.

Also, remove the floor mats and check if any of the drain plug rubbers have fallen out from the floorboard although it seems unlikely that the smells will find a way through from here.

The most common way for outside smeel coming in is because of the open vent. This is used along with the AC either to circulate internal air or to bring in fresh air.

This is not an issue at all and you need not worry.

I don't think that is the only reason. There are many other areas where outside air/smell can penetrate the cabin, specially in a car with HVAC.

Hi,

Somehow I did not get what exactly you meant to say.Whenever I don't require AC,I just switch it off.Which vents are you referring to?Those which are near music system?

The vent button in the swift is the one above the 'AC' button which has a symbol that looks like a 'U' turn. Keep it in such a position that its light is on at all times.

The previous pic was from an automatic climate control system, while raja's Swift VXi should have a manual HVAC like this:

But the push button to put air in recirculation mode is same in both cases. Raja, make sure that button is "on". This means internal air circulation.

I have the same problem in my Indica, even with the vents set to recirculation. Where is this flap located ?

The HVAC recirculation-fresh air flap is located behind the dashboard. If bad odour problem persists, please check passenger/driver emissions to rule out other possibilities.

I sense this to be leading towards the 'hazards while driving' thread.

Please check if the flap is not blocked by leaves, etc. This could happen sometimes due to excessive leafy/dusty environment.

This is the air circulation vent. You will find these on your home air cons as well
