Pete'd Viva CRDi: Smoking All !!!

I have a pete's box on my Accent Viva CRDi since last 8-9 months. Initially, the smoke was never noticeable and as time passed, it started becoming more noticeable.

I spot that under sudden accelaration there is a huge cloud of black smoke that erupts which is becoming a cause of embarrasement.

Any solutions for reducing the smoke to some extent keeping below points in mind?

a) I love sudden accelarations, so please dont ask me to forego that

b) Have a Green Cotton Replacement Filter and it was cleaned once after
7k kms. Do i clean it again? I think it's still not 7K kms yet from my last
cleaning

c) Another point to note, the smoke eruption is very evident in ORVM when A/C is switched on. If the car is running without AC and even under hard accelaration, smoke coming out isn't that bad.

d) I go to a particular IOC bunk to tank-up since i get best FE only from that one. I have already decided my next tankful will be from a different bunk

I love every bit of the box and can't imagine driving my car without it but, at the same time, this black smoke thingy is causing me sleepless nights.

Please help folks, especially the box owners

i'm not a box owner lol....
may be useless, but still worth a try. just remove the box and try once. just to make sure stock setup is still OK. i thought new air filter must make a difference. how's FE?

Suggest try what Kutlee mentioned. My doubt veers towards clogged injectors for one. Also the Pete's must be prompting the ECU to pump in more fuel resulting in black smoke. Check with Pete's also for this..

Are you using premium diesel like hi-speed or something? try using normal diesel and see if the problem persists.

A lot of suggestions, my 2 cents:

Have you tampered the box for enhancing the power? If not, disconnect the battery for 20 mins, reconnect and start the engine. As far as I know when you disconnect the battery and leave it for 15-20 mins, the ECU resets. I was told this when I was getting some flashing lights in my car's dashboard indicating error codes.

Let me know if this works.

I am sure there is nothing wrong with stock set-up. But, sure will give it a try soon. FE hasn't budged a bit. I always drive as if my tail is on fire and still get about 14kmpl in hard-core city conditions

NEVER. Till date, the car has not experienced premium diesel at all.

No tampering with the box and it's still set on Stage 1. I dont know how disconnecting the battery and putting it back on will help. But, will give it a shot. Btw, do i try what you said with engine running or switched off?

b) In summer clogging can happen more often, so before anything else cleaning might be a good idea.

Do you run in city or do highways also? Stretching the engine on long runs will clear up the exhaust pipe, city driving will clog it and during hard acceleration the soot will come out.

Yeah, the first thing that came to mind was to clean the filter. I have some cleaning work on my hands this weekend. Unfortunately, my driving is 80% city and 20% highway.

man i have been telling you from day UNO, please get rid of the stock air filter box, your car is no more under warranty!!!

so no issues regardless, get the Green Green Cotton Storm CAI should help by leaps and bounds, the air sucked by this stock filter box is simply not enough for your PETE's and 195 profile tyres coupled with Heavy acceleration.

You very well know what and how i am running my Viva, so please do that. Also the next time you hit Hyundai A.S.S. get the Engine flush done along with the periodic complete coolant change and GEAR BOX oil change done. I know you do this according to the intervals recommended, but this time do this a little earlier, just so that we eliminate all the doubts we possibly can.

I betting my Two paise on this to work, and the CAI or a Bigger conical Airfilter should do the needful for your problem, you are indirectly LUGGING your ENGINE!!! please dont do that to the baby. You do want the engine to last more than a 100,000KMS right?

EDIT: Even i am looking for a new place to fill diesel, please keep me informed on the same, lets go together to this new bunk and fill up!

Rajesh bhai, actually i am more concerned that you and your rampyaari remain as chamak dhamak as possible. I dont want you guys to lose your pink color, do i? All this exercise of getting this problem resolved is only for YOU

Yash, thanks for this great idea. But, why do i get the feeling that you give ideas which always lighten the wallet?

Jokes apart, i think the following are in store for my red beast

1. Clean Airfilter
2. Clean the injectors and exhaust in next service
3. Finally, if i am still left with some dough, then reward myself with a STORM

Makes sense?

I see this problem happening much more in summers than the winters. I have a fabia with a remap. And I noticed one thing that My car would not smoke much is the night as compared to the day in winters. That's coz in the night air-temp is colder than compared to the day. Later, as the summer started with temp in day time going upto 38 degrees I noticed that the black smoke was more evident cause of the hot climate air. And as we knew hot air is less dense compared to cold air. This also plays an important role in burning of the fuel more efficiently. Black smoke is nothing but unburnt fuel which happens coz of less of oxygen getting in to burn off the fuel. With a remap or tuning box more fuel is added and to burn it efficiently it needs more of oxygen which means colder air. Also just putting a green storm filter with stock intake pipe will not help. As it would block the flow of air. To get optimised one needs custom intake piping.
In my case I customised the intake kit with 3 inch intake piping and green storm filter. Thus increasing the volume and velocity of air. More volume of air mean more particles of oxygen getting in. Thus noticed that the black smoke is almost eliminated. Also there is a difference in power after this compared to the replacement filter. Black smoke will be more during the day time due to the climate heat. I also got my EGR valve and intake manifold cleaned which was filled with Carbon Soot. This made an difference instantly on power, mileage and smoke.

I would suggest.
1. Get your Intake manifold and EGR valve (incase if it has one) cleaned. Which might be clogged due to excessive carbon. Check for this. It really helped me getting it done.

2. Clean your filter more often once in 3000kms of drive.

3. Check and get your Air Mass sensor cleaned.

4. if possible optimise the air intake. or get a customised intake system.

5. if your car is driven over 45000kms check and get the turbo cleaned.
