Help:Hyundai Getz 1.3 stalled midway..

Dear Members,
I own a Hyundai getz 1.3 2005 which has done 46960 kms. It is a second owner vehicle which i had purchased from a used car dealer in february. Yesterday a horrific incident happened while i was driving through heavy rains. The car just went dead midway through traffic!!..I had to literally push the car with the help of crowd around and park it towards the side of the road. Then itried to restart the engine second time..it wouldnt start. All i could hear was a whizzing sound from the starter. The again tried the third time.. but i was again getting the same sound. Stranded midway i called up DSC Hyundai hotline and they arrived in half an hour in a mobile service car. The machanic inspected the car and after going through he informed me that the timing belt has snapped and there are 75% chances valves have bent. How much of a damage can that be??Can it be repaired or do i have to go for a engine replacement..Itz hard for me to swallow the costs associated...so r there any other alternatives here in chennai??Itz funny coz i had recently seviced my vehicle at 46000 and replaced all necessary parts.. but the mechanic there never informed about timing belt replacement. Strangely enough lukin backwards 2-3 days i started hearing funny noises from the engine at idle..i had my doubts..but i took it for granted!!I also hav a doubt bout my vehicles original milaege coz timing belts usually hav to be replaced only at 60-75k kms,and also accordind to hyundai database it has run 89k.

So dear members is there any specialists i can consult regarding this problem in chennai??

What are the costs i m looking at??

Raghav are you hearing me??

Your help will be truly appreciated...thanks

First thing would be to check the status of the engine What are the parts that ned to be changed . If the engine does work after a change of timing belt. I would be glad for you .

since you have bought a 2nd hand car ,the kms might have been tripped . If the damage is extensive like replacing the head ,connecting rods , pistons etc get your self a totalled engine from a fairly new car . It is cheaper that way .

PM me if you need a mechanic who isnt expensive .

My Accent's timing belt snapped at 58000kms.

There is a very very high chance that the Engine Valves must be bent, the entire repair should cost you around 15-25K (depending on the number of parts to be changed) if you get it done at an authorized service station.

And yes the used car dealer did take you for a ride. In most probability the car has done above 1 lac kms.

So its inference engine. Now that its damaged, there is nothing you can do. Only option is to repair the engine.

If the crank is not damaged, its good. Generally in these cases the repairs are expensive.

What was the odometer reading when you bought the car ? You have stated once its 46K kms you have replaced some parts and next you mention its 89K, so IMO, you are cheated by the dealer.

I am not sure but its better if you visit the dealer personally and look at damaged components. How much did you try to crank the engine. Counting its more than 10 seconds, chances are that more than one piston and more than 3 vavles will be damaged, in worst case all 12 valve will need replacement.

I dont understand why manufacturers still make interference engines and then run it with a belt, which has a higher chance of snapping. Its as if they do it on purpose so that they can loot the customer whenever the belt breaks.

Its obvious from your post that the odometer has been tampered before you purchased this car. The timing belt is usually recommended to be changes at 80k - 1 lac km in every car.

If it is broken at 49k kms as in your case, that means the actual odo reading of your car must be at least 1 lac+ kms.

My 800's timing belt snapped at 35K. But no other damage. It cost me 200 bucks for the belt and labor and 900 bucks for towing.

Well, you learn something every day! First time I heard of this type of engine. Hope the Alto does not have this type.

Sad to hear this, get the vehicle checked again by a trusted and experience mechanic.

Can you mention the details of the dealer from whom the car was purchased.

I strongly suggest you take a second opinion. Send me a PM if you want to check with an inexpensive mechanic.

You have mentioned inlet valves, exhaust valves, and "valves" seperately. Are you confused or have they mentioned this multiple times? Also, why the intake/exhaust manifold, alternator, a/c? What latch assembly?

The usual rebuild job involves changing crankshaft, rods, pistons (+rings), valves, camshafts and timing belt depending on what's broken, and finally a new head gasket. Since only your valves are damaged, all that's needed is new valves, camshaft/s, head gasket and timing belt and other miscellaneous stuff. Pay more attention to the estimate and make them explain why they are replacing each part, and ask them to give you the old parts when you get the car back.
