re: Tata Safari 2.2 stolen this morning (DL3C A Y 4878)

Ust to set a couple of things right. The immobilizer is built in /oem. And it is not in they key it is in the remote as if you lock the car and open it with the key and try to start it it will not startuntil unlocked with the remote. And after speaking to a couple of people stealing a safari with an immobilizer (even if the security code is changed) is childs play, under 10 seconds one can start and drive away with the car

That basically beats the whole purpose of putting in such security systems if they are so easily hack-able.
Is this Safari specifc knowledge you got or is it applicable to other Immobilizers as well ?

re: Tata Safari 2.2 stolen this morning (DL3C A Y 4878)

How do we get the key code of the immobilizer changed to something other than the default value? Is this something the dealer/company will do or can we do it ourselves?

sad to hear the loss of your beast. Wondering, if the immobilizer code can be cracked so easily ? factory fitted immobilizers should be tough nut to crack. Wonder when will our car companies start making very active deterrents for car thieves.

Could this device have been used?

Thieves jam key-fob lock signals in mystery car thefts ? The Register

Or maybe this will make us sit up and think really hard about vehicle security?

If one knows the code and has a mechanical key, one can unlock the car. The steps is given in the manual.

re: Tata Safari 2.2 stolen this morning (DL3C A Y 4878)

Sorry to hear about the incident. Hope you get back your Beast soon.

I always make it a habit to place an old mobile phone (Silent Mode, Vibrator off - under the seat/ below the boot mat etc.,) in my car to help track the car in such untoward incidents.

I started following this practice after reading a news report about how a stolen brand new ANHC was recovered within a couple of hours after the incident because of the mobile fone that was left inside the car.

IMO, This works out to be a very cheap and reliable solution.

Sad new. Hope its fully insured. Does your beast used to park at public parking were the attendant keeps the key? this is a place where keys are mostly duplicated even with immobliser.

It also requires a special cable which needs to be used to reprogram it. The code is provided in a sealed cover to the owner just like your ATM pin.
If you have all those yes, you can reprogram it.

Safari does not have a RF ID based integrated key but the immobilizer works along with the ECU to lock/ Unlock.

I would reiterate, report this to TATA CS.

Really sad & shocked to hear about your loss Whatcanthisbe... Hope you do find it and in the worst case, hope it was fully insured. Guess car manufacturers start to think of other deterrents to keep these car thieves away.

@Whatcanthisbe: Hope you get your safari back soon. Friends, my i10 also has immobilizer. I have not gone in for any security system. Is it recommended?

re: Tata Safari 2.2 stolen this morning (DL3C A Y 4878)

Really sad to hear about your loss. Wish you get back the car soon without any hassle. I hope a guy who breaks the immobilizer and steals a car must be a well trained and experienced car thief. I am sure police will surely have a list of such trained car thieves in their jurisdiction. Keep in track with police, they will get back it soon.

re: Tata Safari 2.2 stolen this morning (DL3C A Y 4878)

Thats really bad I suspect this is done using cloning of your Key.

Those who think RFID based key is any safer need to think twice it can be cloned much more easier then something which needs physical access.
In this age when Credit cards and SIM cards can be cloned what a poor RFID or so called iCAT can do? Buying RFID scanner is easiest job.

I now think mechanical gear lock / clamp should be there in all cars ( though I don't have that myself)..
