Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

I'm typing this from the service centre after the update.
Update was just a 15 min process while other formalities took an hour and half.
Yet to drive the vehicle for long, but a short 500 m drive to office did not look like a major change in driving ability.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

I got a letter from Maruti about the update for battery software. Snailmail in the age of telephony and internet! I suppose the recall carries regulatory requirement about informing the affected parties.

I rang up my last Service guy. He asked me to come early morning. I reached at 9am. One guy was doing registration while the other 'techie' plugged his laptop through an adapter to the OBD port. It took about 15 minutes and I was outside the gates.

Before & After:
The battery level indicator in Start-Stop display used to go down to 1 bar frequently before. Now I notice it remains at 3 to 5 bars. It is too short an observation period but it kind of makes sense. The update was supposed to reduce drainage of Li-ion battery.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

After having upgraded to Valeo combination of Fog Lamps on my XL6, it did improve the visibility. However when it comes to High Beam and even the Low Beam throw, is there any way to have this improved by changing to any other brand head lights. Anybody having better experience, kindly share details. Thank you

Did you change only the fog lamp housing to valeo and not the bulbs as well? I am using Valeo + Osram 50W 4200K bulbs and with this combination, I dont have to bother much about Low beam and High beam throw.

Both were changed and I need to check once more which bulbs I have since I used these from my earlier Duster used to give me good visibility. If these are not Osram 50W 4200k, I shall surely change to them and try it. Thank You

After 2 weeks of usage with upgraded software:
Battery level NEVER went down to 1 bar. It is usually between 3 and 4 bars. So I suppose the upgrade worked.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Hi,

I've been following this thread for a while now. I was wondering if it's possible to retrofit the black boot trim of the facelifted XL6 onto the old one.

Could you share the respective part numbers and the process of installation?

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Hello XL6 owners,
There is an observation and a query I'd like to share with everyone here.
Does anyone know how exactly does the Auto aircon on the Ertiga/XL6 functions?

I drive a 2022 XL6 Aplha AT, during my recent drive of 2000 odd kms, the aircon chilled us pretty well in temperatures above 32°C. From what I noticed, the aircon cut-off and blower speed depends only on the outside temperature and does not vary based on in-cabin temperature at all. I'm not sure if the car has an in-cabin sensor?

The speed varies on two aspects, the direct sunlight hitting the car and the temperature measured by the outdoor sensor, placed near the front left fog lamp. Since the temperature would always read 32+, the blower speed never reduced below 4 points (out of 8 I believe). This had cooled the cabin enough to get the in-cabin temperatures around 22°C (assumption). We had to manually adjust the blowers to reduce the fan speed since everyone was feeling cold.

As the sun went down, the blower speeds started reducing and then settled at 1 bar eventually as it went dark and the outside temperature reduced to around 26°C.

All this while I had set the aircon at 25°C, but during the day I never ever saw the blower speed go below 4 bars, except when the vehicle was taken under a covered parking. Even when I increased the set temperature to 28°C, the blower speed reduced by 1-2 bar, all the while when outside was 34-36°C.

As far as I remember, Hyundai's don't work this way and the blower speed varies with an internal temperature sensor too.

Anyone else observed this or any idea how is it in the pre-facelift models?

Eventually, I'm very happy the way the vehicle kept us comfortable in an outside heat of 35°C!

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Updates:

50K PMS: The XL6 crossed 50k mark on the ODO and I got the PMS50 done. Nothing except the usual oil change and the amount was Rs. 3433. Paid just Rs. 633 as for the rest amount, I redeemed the accumulated MSR points.

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20240318_112013.jpg

Headlamp Assemblies changed: I was noticing very mild deposits/marks inside the headlamp assemblies and it was NOT condensation, although it looked like one. I had never observed fogging/condensation and thus it was something else. It looked like oily deposits on the inner side. It was minor but disturbing enough for me, pushed for warranty claim and got it approved under Goodwill. I've been told that there has been a revision of PN(72S02) and these are the latest ones with all updates. Apparently this was a known issue internally and they had made slight updates. Also, the RHS DRL was sometimes flickering and after ascertaining that it wasn't a contact related issue, they replaced it.

Defects, notice the rings formed on lens:

Upgraded to Polk Audio Components DB6502 DB+ at Front and Polk audio Coaxials DB652 DB+ for rear: While the rear coaxials were a direct fit, the front components needed a bit of simple wiring for tweeters and crossovers. Also mounted the crossovers in a unique way. There existed a piece of thermocol on the doorpads, and I made grooves in them so that the crossover can sit in snugly. Absolutely hated when installers pasted them on front doors using double sided tapes or even worse, drilled into the panel.

As expected, clarity has gone up significantly and that's what I personally prefer.

DIY gear oil change: Got the Suzuki Ecstar 75W gearoil from Japan and replaced the oil at 50k mark. Since MASS wouldn't undertake this as MARUTI calls it lifetime fluid, decided to do it on my own and I'm glad I did. The old oil had turned black and significantly thick.

This 75W grade isn't in supply in India till now from Ecstar, however an alternate exists in Shell, priced around Rs. 900/L.

DIY Spark Plugs, coil and brake system clean: Soaked the plugs in cleaner overnight and that cleaned the plugs comprehensively. Also removed the coils, dismantled it carefully and cleaned the insides. The springs had minor rusting and that affects proper energy transfer. Thus it's important to clean them.

Also cleaned the brakes comprehensively and lubricated all the important points, the pads and shoes still have good life left.

Tyre Health: The Conti UC6s are now 30K old and have around 5.2-5.3mm of tread left. Excellent experience till now with them. Periodic tyre rotation is also helping.

Upgraded wipers to those of Toyota Fortuner: I always loved the Hybrid shape wipers on the Crysta. However the Crysta used larger size wipers than XL6. Thankfully the current Fortuner uses the same spec as XL6, 22/16 and I ordered them instantly via Boodmo. Wipe quality is top notch, and for future replacements, I'll just need to change the rubber element and not the entire assembly.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

@LeoShashi As always, I am impressed with your fastidiousness to note and act on tiny imperfections. With such TLC, I am sure your car will last decades.

During 20K service for my Jul 2022 Alpha AT XL6, the bill jumped to 10k - they cleaned the injector, changed engine oil, brake fluid, filters, cleaned brakes, other PMS and wash/wax.
They also did a diagnostic scan for 'free'. I was in the workshop throughout and they seem to be doing a good job to my untrained eyes.

When I asked the mechanic about spark plug cleaning, he said these are Iridium plugs and need no maintenance till they are replaced at 40k.
Is that so? I see that you have Iridium plugs and you did an overnight super clean job on them.
Unlike your model, my 2022 has a large air filter overlying the plugs. Also, I am a bit wary of fiddling with the ignition coil on top of each plug. Are they idiot-proof?!
I will attempt plug cleaning, if you feel, it should be done.

Incidentally, why is RHS wiper blade double the cost of LHS? Are they both driven by single motor in RHS?

@LeoShashi Your posts always full of information, something new to learn everytime.

Seems you have taken extended warranty from Maruti. I also have 3 yr ext warranty (paid total 21k, incl 3k taxes) which will start in June this year. Is it worth keeping? I have a gear lock installed, somebody said it voids the warranty.

Also during rains last week, noticed front wiper rubber making noise when moving on glass, as if rubber is pressing hard on glass. Sound not coming when tried after rain. Will show to service center as standard warranty completing soon

How much does an XL6 headlight cost off the shelf? That MRP is an absolute shocker for me!

Nice updates and perfect DIY. Good that you were finally able to procure the Ecstar 75W. I used to think it would be green in color as the AMT fluid is green too.
Anyways I am also planning for a DIY gear oil change on my Rapid. Not sure if I can use this 75W itself. The VW specs points to 75W in most of the places. Some say 75w80 other 75w90.

Also I am also getting this weird dust inside my headlight and foglight assemblies. Not sure how the dust is entering inside as none of them have been opened.
I do not think Skoda will change them under warranty anytime for this reason

How do you keep it so clean man. I have tried multiple times to clean it but failed every-time.

Further to my previous post, I went through the manual supplied with the vehicle. (Scanned image is appended)

It mentions replacement of the plugs at 1,00,000 kms or 84 months (7 years). I am sure that means these are Iridium plugs.

No Inspection. No Tightening. No Cleaning.

Internet also returns similar results. They specifically advise against cleaning or gap adjustment to prevent damage to the Iridium contact.
However it is advisable to replace at manual recommended km/duration because the plug may corrode and jam in the threads making removal difficult.

@LeoShashi: Your comments please.
