Thank you for the update. Please keep us posted if they replaced the part and if it solved your issue. My ASC insists that this is normal and there is nothing they can do. May be if I could show them the part number, etc, I could have some leverage.

re: Kia Carens 1.4L Petrol Manual | Ownership Review | 25,000 kms up!

I had a chance to see the underbody of Carens during my last car wash as the guy had a lift. I could notice various spots with minor rusting - infact the silencer was also rusting. On reading further came to know that it's a known issue with rusting silencer particularly with Hyundai and Kia models.

Got the underbody 3M coating done along with Bardahl Silencer spray.
Warranty for 3 years.
Underbody spray costed 2800 and Silencer spray for 1300.
But got a discount on both - so had to pay 3100.

Ideally should have been done before rusting starts, but anyways something is better than nothing.

The part has been changed and based on the last 50km drive, the issue has been resolved. I hope it stays so.
The part details are attached.
It was covered under warranty.

Re: Kia Carens 1.4L Petrol Manual | Ownership Review | 25,000 kms up!

My 2023 Hyundai i20 with a similar 8" infotainment system started facing the same ghost touch issue. Instead of contacting the as usual "helpless" customer support and dealer, I looked up the issue on the internet and found the following steps which helped resolve it:

"Followed all the advice that I could find on this issue on this forum, I rebooted it a few times then cleaned the screen with alcohol screen cleaner but to no avail. Then I read on the forum that every time you clean the screen, some of the dirt/dust gets pushed into the outer ridges of the screen frame causing the touch screen into thinking that the dirt/dust is a touch input."

It's a design flaw with the touchscreen. By spraying compressed air around the edges, the issue gets resolved. The software update also seems to fix the issue by reducing the touch sensitivity along the edges.

Sample of this nuisance - happened with or without Android Auto -

LIGHT OPTIONS FOR PRESTIGE+

We recently concluded a longish family road tip on our Carens Prestige+ and found the lights to be highly insufficient.

The trip was impromptu considering we had some holidays for the year end. Intent was to travel from Bangalore to Bhubneshwar and halt there for a couple of days. Then carry on to Rourkela and spend another couple of days there. Then to Jamshedpur and return back to Bangalore. All in all about 10 days.

This was more like a trip down the memory lane as we were visiting relatives, friends, childhood places, etc. And ofcourse enjoy the food around these places.

We were 6 of us, 4 adults and 2 teenagers. Considering the winter season, we had over-packed warm clothes which eventually were highly underutilised. The space in the vehicle felt a bit cramped with so many passengers and luggage, but we managed some how. In retrospect, it wasen't all that bad.

Some thoughts post the trip:

* Vehicle performed fine and in line with expectation.
* Overall drive was relatively comfortable with 6 pax and lots of luggage.
* The suspension felt a bit stressed under the load and the ruts etc from the road could be felt on the body, especially towards the rear.
* Streering felt a bit hard over long hours and could do with a soft over-grip.
* The expansion joints on the highway flyovers tossed the passengers around, especially on the 3rd row, even at moderate speeds.
* We did a lot of night driving and the stock headlights felt very weak.

We tried adjusting the headlight position without much help. Issue was amplified by other vehicles around using bright white aux lights and driving on high beam. We thought to check on the possibilities of upgrading the lighting on our prestige+.

We have seen some of the conversions where they replace the stock halogen with LED lights, but they dont help much. What other options do we have to improve the headlight without compromising on the warrenty? We are also open to additional lights/aux light/ fog light options. There are some projector type fog lights available where they cut the plastic and fit it into them with a separate wiring harness. Is it worthwhile and recommended?

Any suggestions with regards to improving the lighting would be helpful. TIA.

Re: Kia Carens 1.4L Petrol Manual | Ownership Review | 25,000 kms up!

As per previous update, my OEM headunit was suffering from "Ghost Touches" for which SC updated the firmware. It worked fine for few months and then the issue resurfaced again.

SC had no solution and no updated firmware to try. I was left with no option but to chose either a replacement unit from SC at a cost of 40k or look for repair or replacement aftermarket.

In my search to find a replacement unit, Karol Bagh , Delhi was full of options ranging from 15k to 20k.*Then came across a headunit from Trak N Tell - GPS company with inbuilt SIM and GPS tracking. They were having three model - 2GB/32GB, 4GB/64GB and 8GB/128GB.

Visited their Gurgaon office and took a demo and liked it. Booked the unit and installation was scheduled at home. They took three days extra as my only condition was that existing devices should continue to work -
1. Steering Controls
2. Reverse Camera
3. Mic
And of course no wire cutting, coupler to coupler.

Been using the unit since 2 days and see no issues so far. YouTube works out of the box without connecting anything. in case Android Auto is needed, just enable Bluetooth on phone and it connects instantly.

Warranty is replacement of unit for 1 year.
Data via Airtel SIM is 10GB and valid for lifetime which is free of cost.
8GB/128GB model costed me 11,000 and they have an option of interest free on EMI too.
( Installation is included in this price. All cables, connectors etc are included. Also included is the plastic panel/frame which would fit the car/stereo display )

Old Unit came in two separate sections - display unit/folder and main stereo.

Installation was smooth. Though they had to visit twice as they forgot the USB cable connector first time. All existing devices work as they were with OEM player - steering controls, reverse camera and mic ( they do provide mic included in the price if you don't have OEM mike installed )

What about the other functions like sound and KIA specific functions which used to be controlled from settings menu and the DRVM ? As the OS is different i think you lost all the seat sound mapping etc controls ? please elaborate I am also looking for something of an upgrade. I wanted to see if we can get the KIA Connect model, as I have the non Kia connect one.

Hey ! My model do not have any of these connected car features. For me, Android Auto + Youtube + Android Apps + Radio + GPS works and that matters.

This is NOT an upgrade to OEM system - but rather a replacement, that too at a cheaper cost. Look for other options if you want an "upgrade" without loosing any existing functions.

Re: Kia Carens 1.4L Petrol Manual | Ownership Review | 25,000 kms up!

So, after my Head Unit upgrade, the biggest disadvantage was repeated ads every few minutes. Though there was an option to skip those in 5 seconds, but watching an Ad irrespective of what you are doing in HU was driving me mad.* This fact of showing ads was not disclosed or known to me before the purchase.

On speaking to vendor, they said the max which can be done is reducing the number of ads, but those cant be disabled.

Which prompted me to look for some other options - and in coordination with someone from XDA forums installed a modded firmware on top of existing, and it got rid of annoying ads. No longer ads, and HU works absolutely fine.

Those who want to take this chance can get in touch with me directly, and i'll share the modded firmware which needs to be pasted on root directory of USB and just perform Android Upgrade from HU.*Pretty simple and straight forward approach - but like always, would recommend taking a backup, and do this at your own risk.
