Re: Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view

Hi Samba,

Congrats on the new Jimny. It was a pleasure reading your detailed review.
Jimny manual is an absolute hoot to drive. It gives smiles when revved hard in every gear. It is all I wanted my Gypsy to be.

Re: Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view

An awesome unbiased honest review of the Jimny. I doubt anyone can add anything more to this report. I got my Jimny Zeta MT delivered on 23rd December 2023. Have since then driven the vehicle for well over 10K kilometers. Presently odo is standing at 19700+ kilometers. The vehicle has been nothing but a joy to own at least for me. Upgraded the stock 60/55W Philips H4 bulbs to Osram 100/90W H4 with factory fitted relay in the vehicle. Reliable, compact enough to get into quite a few narrow lanes in and around my locality. The superb ride quality and the ability to make small patches and potholes on the road vanish is a highlight definitely for me. The only bothersome aspect of the car for me personally has been the large turning radius. Have got a few mods done to improve the car's long distance driving comfort from what it already is at. Most of them have been bought from Amazon Japan store. All of them are more or less reversible. I have always added things to my car to increase utility of the vehicle. The car delivers good FE too provided one is easy on the accelerator. As you have said, it can gather speeds but that is pointless. Best to stick to a comfortable speed and cruise along all day long. Attaching a few pictures of my car.

Regards,
Subhra

I wish you thousands of happy miles. This mountain goat can take you to the moon and back.

P.S: I was quite surprised by the suspension comfort as well, did not expect this from a light weight ladder frame

Thanks HORSEPOWER. I was okay with a turbo Petrol too, when I bought the Jimny, the Thar 5 door was nowhere near its launch. And am not sure about the Thar 5 door's mileage figure too.
Maruti's 'kinta deti hai' was actually among the deciding factors that made me choose this car. I never thought I would ever look at the mileage figure before buying a car, but given my usage, I had to look at it.

Thanks. I saw quite a few local Jimny's during my trip to Arunachal. Will hear about the juggad once we meet. God knows why, but from the last one month, it has become okay on its own. The Jimny is starting on a single crank on the inclines too. I am keeping a watch on it.

Do keep updating the thread with more of your experiences and do tell where you get your accessories from. As a former Duster owner it was great to read the Jimny is just as much fun and comfortable to drive and own.

Could you let me know where you got the key covers from? And have you installed a dasham of any sort and if so then which one?
Thanks, Evyas.

Sure, I will update this thread from time to time.

I got the key covers from Amazon.

Thanks Subhra. The small mods you have done to your Jimny are subtle and useful. Like many people who go overboard and keep adding accessories that they will never use in their car's lifetime, on the contrary, all your mods are practical & they increased the aesthetics of your Jimny too.

Re: Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view

An exceptionally well documented review of Jimny ! Thanks for taking time and producing this detailed review Samba. I completely agree to the point you made for the rear seat. They totally lack under thigh support and would not suit a rear passenger for a long overnight journey. This is for me is the deal breaker, otherwise I was seriously thinking of getting one. The dwindling sales number is another worry. Not sure how long Suzuki will keep selling Jimny in India. Will wait and watch Suzuki's move as I am in no hurry.

Re: Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view

Well described the features and all the small inputs of Jimny. As I am also an owner of this small but efficient machine, it will help me to find some more features when required. The jack mounting spot is a very good input to myself as I was also inquisitive for the spot . Thanks Samba for this useful upload.

Re: Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view

Incredibly detailed ownership review of a car which will be iconic in the years to come. That the review will have your imprint written all over was known already, but then what makes this thread even more stellar, is the fact that you have probably not spared any little detail about the Jimny here Samba.

I know you will put this car to the maximum use possible and your Arunachal Pradesh log is just the beginning of the things to come. I wish you many more incredible travels with this delightful vehicle, may you get to places where the Duster probably couldn’t go. Will look out for the updates every now and then.

Re: Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view

9,000 km update-

This post is to highlight the niggles of the Jimny. The good part has been discussed a lot.

1) Scratch marks on the propeller shaft-

Link- https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techn...ml#post5824804 (Maruti Jimny: Propeller shaft rubs against car underbelly under extreme articulation or load)

Status- Unresolved.

2) Brakes -

Link- https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techn...altitudes.html (Maruti Jimny AT | Brakes not functioning at low rpm at high altitudes)

Mine is an MT. Let me share one incident I faced. This has no link with the above-shared link. I was in a hurry, & immediately after starting the car I took it out of the garage and applied the brakes to stop. I found the brake pedal to be hard.

Solution- When we start the car & the engine is cold, the idling rpm reaches nearly 1,500. Then slowly it takes a few seconds to come down to 750 rpm. We must give that time to create the vacuum. Before that, if we try to move the car and apply the brakes, the pedal may feel hard. So it's a good practice to move ahead once the rpm settles down to 750.

Status - I won't call it an issue yet, though I'm yet to test it above 10,000 feet altitude where the real problem has been reported.

3) Starting trouble-

This issue has not yet been reported anywhere, but it needs attention-

I mentioned this earlier while compiling the ownership review-

Quote:
Originally Posted by Samba View Post

I have faced this twice in the last 1,500 km. Now this happens on the flat surface as well.

What exactly happens?

On the first crank, the self keeps rotating and the car does not start. I need to push the start/stop button or release the clutch to stop the self from rotating.
On the 2nd crank, it takes longer but the car starts.

Now, from the Jimny owners group, I found that at least 4-5 owners have faced the same issue. I have taken my car to the service center to get this checked but they got no error codes.
Still, I have officially lodged it as a complaint, & I mailed the video clip of this, which I took out from my car's dashcam.

Luckily one owner from Kolkata faced the same issue and the check engine light came up on his car. When he took his car to the service center, he got this error code-

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-d468e47426114e5da9aa43ed88e23e21.jpg

The service center that he visited, instead of finding the root cause, deleted the code and let him go, & for us, they keep saying unless the car generates an error code they can't do anything!

In the 9,000 km, I faced this randomly for few times. This is hard to replicate. This can happen when the engine is hot or even when the engine is cold.

Status- Unresolved

4) Steering off-center

In many Jimny's including mine, the steering wheel is slightly off-center towards the right.

Status- Resetting the steering angle sensor and then getting an alignment done solves this. I have not tried to get this sorted. As there is no alignment issue or uneven tire wear. As of now, I'm ignoring this.

5) Brake Juddering or wobble -

Few owners who have covered more than 15,000 to 20,000 km have reported this issue.
I have not faced this issue.

Status - Replacing the brake disc solved it for a few people & a few owners suspect a faulty panhard rod.

When parking, are you in the habit of switching off the engine first and then applying brake?

If not, this looks like a design flaw, there should be enough residual pressure for at least one full press of the brake pedal before engine is started, even if a car is idle for >1 month.

Try this:
  • At the end of a drive, park vehicle, engage handbrake, turn off engine
  • Pump the brake pedal till it becomes super hard, to drain all residual brake booster pressure
  • Allow the B pedal to return to it's rest position
  • Apply light pressure on the B pedal
  • Restart engine
  • Check how many seconds pass before the booster pressure builds up and the B pedal moves down

As shown in the error code list, a faulty Crank/Cam Position Sensor can cause this starting issue. But it should have always thrown an MIL.

Re: Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view

I have a different sort of issue on my Jimny Alpha AT. I have a separate thread on that. Brake pedal goes hard after 30 minutes of switching off the engine.
I suspect a vacuum leak so after lots of hardship, sourced the brake vacuum check valve hose. Will replace and observe for any changes. I suspect a faulty check valve or maybe again a "Design flaw".
Even if the engine has just been started, the residual vacuum stored in the brake booster held with a good check valve or non return valve should last for few days.

Also, I had noticed long crank on my Jimny when the car is parked in the sun. Never happens when the car is parked in shade or in the morning in my garage. Weird issues and Its a herculean task to explain the MS service guys about the issue. I tried and failed to get my brake pedal going hard resolved or even acknowledged.
I had alignment issues as well which the service guys somehow resolved after 3 visits and a few harsh tweets.

Was not expecting a Suzuki Jimny coming up with such pesky issues.
Knew about the Jimny as a bulletproof reliability vehicle and thanks to Maruti Suzuki now, we got the issues coming in.
And Honestly I dont expect anything from Maruti Suzuki.

Re: Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view

5000 Kms Second service update of my Alpha MT

No bangle scratches on the propellor shaft. I believe these scratches appear in the case of extreme articulation with full load on the vehicle.

As reported by some I am not facing any braking issues believe these are not issues because brake pedal anyways gets hard post ignition off and gets soft after starting the vehicle. This happens in all vehicles and is normal.

Jimny is a great vehicle and its prowess comes in full action in hills and offroad.

See if you can source an OEM spec bonnet insulation and install it.

Also what sequence do you follow before starting the vehicle ? Try hitting the start button without pressing the brake , allow it to finish the song and dance and then start the engine.

I'm thinking it is the heat and the lack of fuel pressure. In some vehicles the lack of Insulation or simply lack of adequate airflow inside the bonnet will cause the battery to give up early, but this being petrol the demand on battery should be less anyways.

Re: Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view

Just a question -

The Jimny headrests seem too big for that small interior. It also impacts rear visibility for the driver and also "in the face" for the rear seat passenger. Is there an option to swap those headrests with any other Maruti makes, like a smaller one in height/flatter ? Will those holes align ? If anyone have an idea, throw some light
