After spending a year with Jimny, will I buy one again, given the choices present in today’s date?

The answer is YES.

I am more than happy with this car. I bought this car knowing its shortcomings, so there were no unwanted surprises. I very well knew what I was buying, as the decision was made after thorough homework/research including taking quite a few test drives.

I have shared the pros & cons (including the niggles) about this car in my previous posts in this thread.

So let me share the fun part in this post -

Fun off the road - Check
Having fun on the highway - Check (This may sound weird with a Jimny, but we had fun with it!)
Point and shoot through dense city traffic - Check
Drive to the Himalayas - Check
Drive to the seaside - Check

States/Union territories covered during this one year -

West Bengal
Assam
Arunachal
Bihar
Odisha
Andhra Pradesh
Tamil Nadu
Pondicherry
Karnataka
Telangana

Sharing a few pics -

Hi, I have been reading your posts on Jimny and may be they played a part in making me purchase one. I am about to take one in blue black shade and wanted to ask how difficult it is to mantain this colour and any other colour you recommend except white/nexa blue.

My first car was a White Gold Ford Freestyle and maintaining it felt easy. Never faced any hardship maintaining it. Then I decided to buy a Jimny and the Bluish Black looked awesome to me, so bought that one.
Only after buying this, I realised that most dark colored cars around us are full of prominent swirl marks and that looks pretty odd. To my horror I thought, what have I got myself into! I'll admit that I have OCD when it comes to maintaining cars and I realised that I can't live with a dark colored car having swirl marks all around. So I got ceramic coating done right after delivery and it has helped me a lot to maintain the car without much swirl marks on the painted surface. A certain procedure needs to be followed to maintain Ceramic Coated cars. Hence, I have always washed my Jimny myself. It's not that difficult if you have proper tools and setup at your disposal, otherwise it'll feel like a herculean task to follow that procedure. Another option is to get it washed at any car detailing shop where the professionals know what not to do with a ceramic coated car. Since I happily live in a village, I don't have such professionals around and I have to wash it all by myself.

Conclusion: You can buy any dark colored Jimny and live with it if you're not as paranoid as me and if you're okay with having swirl marks on the paint. Professional waxing and polishing twice/thrice a year helps removing the swirl marks, but in our country's weather, I don't think of this as an amicable solution. Since you don't want white, I'd suggest you to go for the red one as it'll stll be better than Bluish Black and Granite Grey (in terms of swirl marks & maintenance). Hope this helps.

Thank you for the response. I guess, the blue black is the best color in jimny and I have decided to go with it. Also, I am not too worried about the car being too dirty. Besides, I have never had a black car (though used red and white) and I guess it is time to own one and experience the color.

Black suits most cars and it certainly looks appealing on Jimny. Since you have made your mind, by all means, please go ahead and get one Bulish Black Jimny. I'm sure you'll love it. The experience of owning a black car is certainly worthwhile. All the best!

Hello Sir, Just for you, I downloaded an old dashcam footage from my Jimny, where the engine sound is prominent from 0-110 km/hr. I am sharing the video here. If the sound on your Jimny is the same, then there is nothing to worry about, it's normal functional sound.

Just ignore the screeching sounds. That was from the friction between my Crocs and the clutch pedal while changing the gears!

Absolutely. Changing the tires will 100% depend on one's usage. So the owner is the best judge whether to go for it or not. For me, I do not take my Jimny for extreme off-road drives nor do I have any plans to take it to the snow any time soon. So the stock tires are good for me. Once the life of the stock tires comes to an end, then I will decide on whether to upgrade or not depending on my future trip/OTR plans.

The bluish-black is a tough color to maintain. My car is filled with swirl marks. If you opt for this color, then as Bhpian Arghya mentioned, please go for a ceramic or PPF if you want your car to look spick and span all the time.
Wish you 1000s of happy miles with your new car.

Update on my car- It crossed the 16,000 km mark.

One new niggle to be reported. The driver's side door request sensor is acting weird for the last one week. It has got a mind of it's own and works on it's own whims! Barring this everything is going good, & am totally enjoying the car.

For the last 1,000 km city drive, I got approximately 13 km/L in city traffic with 80% usage of AC. Which I feel is quite good.

Regarding the recall of Kingpin and brake disc-

I had a talk at the service center regarding the famous wobbling issue and their recall on changing the brake disc and king pin. As of now they are replacing the parts only for the affected cars. My car do not have this issue till now. So let's see how this goes. The service center guys assured me, if I feel any kind of wobbling, I just need to inform them seven days in prior, so they can order the parts & keep it ready.

Thank you for the recommendation. I landed up with a color which I had not thought about. It is the grey color and I have made peace with it. Wanted a black one but was a little bit hesitant about maintenance and scratches being too visible. All blue blacks went out of stock and the only one left was a grey-alpha-AT. I think it should be fairly easy to maintain and at the same time dark enough to look good as Samba rightly pointed out. Sometimes GOD makes our decisions easier by removing the choices. Will post the pics soon. Cheers!!!

Re: Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view

A small report on an Off-roading event with our Jimny

A driving group named Driving DNA took me as their mentor for the off-road event. The event was held at Purulia in some jungle trails. The trail was tricky at places & we needed to engage the 4WD correctly, and the correct wheel placement was important.

We had 13 cars, 10 4WDs, 2 AWDs, and a 2WD. The 2WD (VW Taigun) was parked at the place from where we had to engage the 4WD.

Sharing a video from my dashcam to get an idea of the trail.

Till 3 minutes 20 seconds, it was from Day 1, where the surface was a bit slippery after the rain. At the 25-second mark, the lack of traction was evident. The car slide a bit to its left.

From 3 minutes 20 seconds, it was on day 2, and it was all about correct wheel placement and correct use of the 4WD.

At the 5 minutes 30 seconds mark, I had to tow out a Thar with my Jimny as it got stuck due to wrong wheel placement.

From the 8 minutes 42 seconds mark, the sideways tilt can be understood.

Me while giving an initial briefing on the dos and the don'ts before the trail drive.

Sharing the pics with a bit of details-

When we started for the trail on day one, it started to drizzle, and the trails were slushy. So, while climbing this hillock, the traction was on the lower side, with the tires filled with muck. But with 4L and steady acceleration, the Jimny climbed up effortlessly.

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-img_5027.jpg

The Thar did well, too, without any drama.

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-img_5031.jpg

I was a bit worried about the Roxx because of its dimensions. The approach turn to climb the hillock was very narrow. But the Roxx managed it beautifully. Despite its size and the longer wheelbase, this car is a very capable off-roader.

The OG Thar!

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-img_5034.jpg

The XUV500 managed to climb up without any drama, too. The only challenge it faced was its width while taking the turn on the way down.

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-img_5036.jpg

The kinetic yellow Jimny was looking fab in this low light.

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-img_5038.jpg

We didn't try to climb the hillock with the Kodiaq due to its approach angle and long wheelbase. But on the slippery surfaces, this car performed beautifully. The electronics did their work flawlessly. At one place, there was a downward slope with a curve with very poor traction. All the cars more or less slide a bit, but the Kodiaq was rock steady over there. This car should be great on roads with less traction.

Lastly, what an elegant-looking car this is!

Returning to our resort after sundown. It was fun driving during the evening through the jungle trails.

We had all kinds of Thars here! The old gen Thar, the new gen petrol & diesel 3-door Thars, and the Roxx! Over time, the 3 door Thars have already proved their merit. The Roxx is the new kid in town, and it did impress us! What an effortless off-roader it turned out to be! I am keeping aside the LWB vs SWB debate as of now!
The Xuv500 AWD can perform well in the hands of a capable driver. Bhpian Lovercars21 proved it yet again.

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-img_5072.jpg

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-img_5074.jpg

Looks scary, but it was fun. This was done under proper supervision. Without proper caution, the car can topple.

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-img_5065.jpg

This obstacle was quite challenging. The Jimny is a narrow car, I was quite skeptical about taking the Jimny first. We had a very experienced off-roader and a rally driver with us (Nawab da). He took the initiative and took his 1st gen Thar over this. I was the spotter for him. After he took the Thar, I decided to take the Jimny, but I kept 4-5 people by the side of the car as a backup in case the car got tilted towards the rut & things become risky; they could give some support from the side. But the Jimny amazed me. It crossed the section without any drama. Nawab da did a fantastic spotting.

All the cars cleared this obstacle except the XUV500 & the Kodiaq was kept back at the resort. At one point, the XUV was losing traction. I asked Bhpian Lovercars21 to switch off the traction control as it may cut the power. Later, he told me that could be a reason the car failed to climb. Maybe with the traction control on, the BTC would have gotten activated, and the car could have cleared it. I am not sure how the BTC works in the XUV500. In my earlier Duster AWD the BTC used to work flawlessly with the ESP off. I missed a Duster AWD, an Xuv700 AWD, & a Compass AWD in this drive! It could have been a good test for them.

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-img_5060.jpg

The total km covered for this event was 754 km. Jimny returned a mileage of 11.6 km/L, including the off-road part, which I feel is quite decent.

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-img_5095.jpg

A much-needed cleaning and polishing after the event.

Maruti Jimny Alpha MT Review | An owner's point of view-img_5451.jpg

Few takes on the Jimny from this off-road event-

Stock Jimny is quite capable off-road. I will again say, do not spend unnecessarily on mods. Drive the car off the road, understand the requirements/limitations, and then spend. My car is still on the stock tires, and I am more than happy with it.

Coming to the Jimny's regular usage & update-

The odometer reading is nearing the 18,000 km mark. There is one niggle which cropped up. I could feel a Kat Kat sound from the clutch pedal while pressing it, so I took the car to the service center. They suspected a faulty slave cylinder and asked me to bring the car again so they could get it thoroughly checked.
But surprisingly, after the off-road event, this sound vanished on its own. So, I am keeping an eye on it. I am also feeling the pedal to be a bit spongy when fully pressed. So, let's see how this goes. I will get the 20,000 km service done at 19,000 km itself. Will get the clutch thoroughly checked at that time. In case I find anything odd before that, I will get it checked earlier. Bleeding the brake/clutch fluid might help, too. The brake fluid level is fine, and there is no leakage.

In between, we took the car for a day drive to Asansol. It was a 450 km drive, and the Jimny managed to complete the drive with one tank full of petrol. After returning, the DTE was around 64 km. If driven between 90-100 km/hr, one can cover 500 km in one tank of fuel! Jimny returned a mileage of 14.5 km/L. Which I feel is decent.

A custom-made lane for the Jimny?

Jimny towing Thar goes on to show why Jimny is so successful worldwide. Its a excellent tool for a singular purpose thats go anywhere attitude. Thats why I think Suzuki does not care about what some folks may say about power etc as their engineers designed it for a purpose.

Excellent thread.
