go check out the mondeo
only 14 .5 lak on road.
its an awesome car.
if not that , then in get an accord new one done 5k km for some 14.5 lakh.
stay away from the sonata.
the corolla is also good.
the old accord deal is awesome
just go for it and chnge the tyres an put alloys.
the tyres suck.
my pet would be a new or second hand mondeo
followed by a new or preowned accord
chow dude

P.S - do not consider an sonata
you can also get an used merc S class if u want.
even an e class - preowned though
enjoy your new car and remember to drive safely

Why is that? Is that because of the government tax (duties)? If so, that is outrageous. A brand new cyl. Sonata in the states are going for around $12,000 (about 6 lacs?) nicely equipped. That's with a $2000 incentive, 10 year/100,000 Mile warranty, and 0% financing. And still most people don't buy it, they opt for toyotas and hondas because of the horrible resale value on hyundai's.

Dude, a brand new Sonata is for $16,000 before any incentives. You can choose either a $2000 rebate OR 0% financing...NOT BOTH. Also this price does NOT include taxes - local and otherwise, destination charges etc.

Dealer discounts would be available but there is no way you can drive a brand new Sonata home for $12000.

And yes, the prices in India are significantly higher because:

1. Most of the cars are not even manufactured here due to the small size of the market. They are imported as Semi Knocked down or Completely knocked down. Some models are imported Completely built up also.

2. Taxation is significantly higher in India with octroi, excise, sales tax and import duties.

12k for a brand new Sonata ? That's about 4,000 below invoice. Which area are you talking about ? The Sonata is not a popular car in the US, but the true market value (what customers are actually paying) of a 4Cyl base model is in the 16-17k range, before tax and titles.

Here's a quote from carsdirect.com. Everyone knows their prices arn't the best when it comes to New Car prices. So, it is possible to get a price better than this haggeling at the dealer. This quote is actually $200 higher than when i tried it a few days ago. It came up $12,900 with a 5 speed manual. But here's the on I just did right now with an A/T car.

Pricing as of May 01, 2004 in ZIP Code 07013

2004 Hyundai Sonata Base 4dr Sedan

Accessory Group 1 :

•Air Conditioning
•Power Windows
•Power Mirrors
•Power Door Locks
•Front Side Air Bags
•Cruise Control.

Engine: 2.4L I-4 DOHC MPI
4-cylinder engine with 2.4-liter displacement, dual overhead cam valvetrain, multi-port injection

- Transmission: Electronic 4-Speed Automatic w/Overdrive
- Tires: P205/65HR15 AS BSW Michelin
- Heavy Duty tires with 205mm width, 15.0" rim
Wheels: 15 in. Steel
- Front Bucket Seats
- Cloth Seat Trim
- Radio: Electronic Tuning AM/FM Stereo w/CD
- Monotone Paint Application
- Manufacturer's Destination Charge

CarsDirect Price:$13,841 (including $540 destination charge)

Again, isn't the very best price around. People have been purchasing cars for years at or even below invoice price due to the dealer holdback. The price is also around $800 less for a car with the 5 speed manual gearbox.

So, with the automatic it comes to $13,841 + $830 (6% NJ Tax) for a total of, $14671. x45(rupees) around 6.6Lacs.

Powerslave, no $16-17k is not the current market value (what customers are actually paying), of a base 4cyl Sonata before tax. $16-17k is the TMV for accords. A relative of mine bought a black 4door 4cyl. LX automatic accord for $16,900 brand new. That is pre-tax of course.

GTO, your right the rebate dosn't qualify you for the 0% finanacing. I was confused with another automaker here that was offering $3000 rebate PLUS 0% financing. I believe it was chrylser. Even then today's rate on a new car loan is 3.85% with excellent credit through Capital One Auto Finance. This too went up the past few weeks from 3.5%.

And guys, the point is, even at this price I wouldn't consider this to be a great buy. People arn't exactly knocking the doors down to buy this car at even this price. Can't imagine anyone paying nearly 2times as much. Especially considering it will be worth half in a couple of years.

quoting the auto car india ...rebates of upt to rs.1 40 000 on the sonata. i mean what happened to their flagship luxury model in india. maybe they shouild bring in the grandeur to india. it is a good replacement too. if i ever brought the sonata it would be just for the equipment level and the v6. also maybe those decent rims and paint job!

$14671 is closer. Check the Edmunds TMV - That's fairly accurate - haggling, dealer incentives and all taken into account.
For arriving at Indian prices, how I wish they used your logic of multiplying the US car price with the current exchange rate
