Sparkle Blue i20 Unveiled!!

Having driven brother’s Swift now and then from past three years it was time to buy a car for myself. After a good amount of research, understanding pros and cons and giving up to head over heart I decided to buy i20 Asta 1.2 petrol instead of a Punto 1.4. The rest of the story follows..

It was on 3rd of June I booked my Sparkle Blue i20 Asta 1.2 petrol (I call it as Sparky!) at Trident, Sankey Road. Got call on 16th of June informing me about the dispatch of car from manufacturing unit. Went and did a thorough pre registration check at Trident yard near to Golden Palm resort on 19th June(Thanks a ton to all bhpians for their effort in preparing the check list).

It was on 24th that I brought Sparky home. It was a great experience at the dealership and all sales folks I met were very polite and helpful.

I know ideally this thread should have come a little early but my procrastination and decision to write up after some 1000+ kms of driving resulted in 2 months of time.

Now that I have driven Sparky for around 1900+ kms (1400 highway + 500 city) I am better placed to write about the ownership experience.

Some initial observations are as follows..
  • During booking time people who asked me why on earth Blue, after looking at the car call it a nice color!
  • Interiors are really good (especially blue lights during night and for a blue car!) with loads of features and ease of use which gives you a premium car feel.
  • It’s a boon for city driving. Highway drives with 5 people on board + boot full luggage I expected the performance to be better (Blame the 1.2 liter madness). The art is to downshift as many times as and when you need adequate power at the cost of mileage though.
  • For a stock audio system its very good and stock tires Apollo acelere are also pretty adequate in doing their job. I am loving the USB and AUX IN on the system...
  • Suspension set up is softer than swift hence better ride quality, though I feel comparatively compromises on handling characteristics. Well before this I was very much adapted to driving Swift and the way it throws itself with ease around the corners. While driving i20 (when alone) I sometimes feel too much of rolling in this car (feels like boat when road is not proper and I am going slowly on them). With 2+ people on board its normal. I got so cranky that during my first service I got the suspension examined only to find out that its normal behavior of this car unless you guys think otherwise.
  • The silver console bordering of the side AC vents reflect badly in the side view mirrors during night when city lights fall on them. This in a way confuses when you look at the mirrors in mad traffic!
  • Disk brake pad dust that settles on front alloys are a night mare to clean. After a long drive front two alloys become black and rear ones still shine
Overall its been great driving it around with no niggling issues.. Let the photos do rest of the talking...

Hi Kiyon,
Really good color choice. Please let us know what made your buying decision tilt towards i20 rather than punto or swift? I mean what all factors made you select Karishma rather than katrina or Madhuri!

Congrats on your new drive & Drive Safe.

Are you sure it is disc brake dust? Please check & get it confirmed as it might be tyres touching something.

I always believed that only Fiat cars would accumulate large amounts of black dust on the front alloys.Yes, our Fiat Punto has similar behavior and it's really a pain to clean the dust.

But now I believe that our car looks awesome with the pseudo black painted alloys

PS: I don't know whether it's nothing much to worry about.

Congrats ! Nice color indeed.

That brake dust issue is normal.Even i am facing it on my i20.Buy a formula1 rim cleaner from spar supermarket.Costs 400 rupees and is worth every penny. You wont worry about that dust thereafter.check out the link for it

http://www.formula1wax.com/products/...eelCleaner.php

BTW,which is that location in your first pic?Its beautiful

@AnandG
I like the way you have compared !! :-)

First of all i wanted to buy petrol as my monthly run will be below 1000Kms..

Swift: I really love the way it drives.. It definitely is a driver's car.. Considering we already have one swift at home it was out of choice. Me and my brother stay together and I can get Swift whenever i want to spin it around..

Punto: Yes it was definitely a tough call to say no to punto 1.4. The other 1.2 never interested me. I just love the amount of confidence it inspires when you are in the driver's seat.. It definitely is one of the best hatch backs in indian market. I almost had made up my mind on booking electric blue color when fiat stopped that color! The test cars i drove had many issues like parts dropping off and some things not working.. I didnt like the cheap interiors after paying 7 lakh.
I know its improving day by day but that moment I some how didn't have much confidence to rely on Tata service and wanted something niggle free.. So had to listen to my head than heart. Its totally how you look at it..

Absolutely, I like i20's stock system and the front components do a great job. One does not feel it mandatory to change the speakers unless you are an Audiophile of course.
I thought only Punto leaves this black dust. I agree it does not look good.

Hey! Understood Katrina and Madhuri but why Karishma(too old for i20)? Could have said Kareena.

Hey congrats for the ride.
Good to hear dealers have started offering freebies. Only you have got these stuff or everyone else is also getting it?
Any idea if corporate or any other sort of cash discount will be available this year end on this car?

@Me-hul
I don't think there will be any corporate or cash discount available in the near future for this car.. If possible wait till Diwali.. By the way from Sep 1 there is an increase in the price also by 1.2% as per the message i received from Hyundai..

I could manage some freebies only after some bargaining...I am not sure what others are getting...
