Test-Driven : Tata Nano!
(
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-drives-initial-ownership-reports/89667-test-driven-tata-nano-16.html)
This car would have found its way into the second car market, if it had the CVT. Tata putting the Manual must have been to keep the efficiency as high as possible.
With all the hype many people who have owned Splendours' for a some time now might buy the Nano as weekend get aways, with our petrol prices it will not that easily become a every day commute. Replacing a bike giving 65 kmpl with a car giving 20-25kmpl is quite difficult.
It would have cut it with many Activa owners if it had a CVT. After all it has more space to carry things. Finally, most of our country roads are tiny and there is no space to take a Nano into it.
With CVT many women would have adopted the Nano. But with gears, they would be skeptical.
But the good point is that many people now have a choice. If they are safety conscious they would prefer a Nano to a second hand car(lower maintainance cost). And A/B segment cars are a bad buy right now, cause their resale value is questionable.
And great job TATA as this is quite an achievement. Its a new segment in creation and once again we have simple, modern & straight to face car that can carry four people under the roof. Surprisingly the car is spacious enough to put many cars much pricier to shame.
Good review!!
Nice Job Tata!!! seems like you finally have a winner on hands, just ensure that A.S.S.'es do not ruin the experience with bad service.
Personally speaking, am booking one for my family. :)
My two pennies on the debate regarding Nano and two wheelers, There are few points to consider:
1. Nano is 4 seater, possibly more given bikes are seen with upto 4 ppl on them... tht way, seating in nano is anybody's guess.
2. FE of car is estimated at 23.4 kmpl by ARAI, a government institution therefore it is quite accurate.
3. It is a suitable mean of transport, be it rain or sunshine.
4. It is massively safe as compared to a bike. In fact, it is one of the safest small cars around, Believe it or Not, It was approved by ARAI and Homologation within a week. A record for any car in India.
5. You would rather travel in one Nano rather than 2-3 bikes when traveling with family. Anyways 2 bikes equal an average of (65/2) which is 32.5 as compare to 24 from Nano. You can also take some luggage, impossible when you are traveling with wifey and kid on a 65kmpl bike.
6. For a single person, Nano is beneficial in transporting stuff.
7. It is not made of fiber-sheet as some miscreants have been advertising. It is pure TATA STEEL.
8. Air Con - You don't get this luxury on a bike.
9. A speed of 60-80 on highway is safe in Nano, not really if you are on 2 wheeler.
10. It is a boon for women drivers and college students given the ever deteriorating women safety in some towns.
11. Having test driven one myself, I can safely declare it is a lot better than many of its almost doubly priced competitors.
12. It is a proud example of PURE INDIAN automobile. There are no doubt other ppl (M&M et al) but none have impacted global automobile market in quite the same way. KUDOS to little nano for making a big statement for our country.
On the Flip Side:
1. Nano is not really for people who drive the otherwise lac rupee motorbikes. They may buy it as enthusiast but really, they are not target customer.
2. Parking constraint for people who have till date used 2 wheelers and have very less porch space in their house/building.
3. Yes, you do need to learn to shift gears.
4. Nano is not going to change the way we travel affordably, but it is a step in the direction.
5. It is not going to kill the competition. Not yet atleast and not for another 2 years time.
Got a mailer on the Nano today with a link to the Nano Merchandise shop. Interesting stuff - it looks like they're trying to build a lifestyle around this thing, which is a very good idea:

Excellent idea and Brilliant stuff. clap:
I must say Tata is going all out to promote the Nano, and establish themselves as a company catering to each level of consumers.
Most of these things were at sale during the Auto Expo 2008 when the Nano was unveiled. I was so impressed by the car that I bought the keyring there and then and it still holds the keys of my Swift :)
Nano has finally arrived at the showrooms of TATA motors. Has anyone got there hands on this baby machine? I called up the dealership in bangalore (Prerna & Manipal Motors) only to hear that the test drives are not available for NANO !
:deadhorse
So far TATA showrooms are not giving test rides of the car even in Mumbai, or atleast that's what they told me. I was also told that they are selling the Appl forms in hundreds!
Many think its targetted for 2-wheeler owners. So will I ever go for it? I think I will, as a second car, to traverse short distances in the town, and my wife already loves the looks of it. Though I will go for the top version.

Just a thought regarding the Nano. If Tata motors would sell the engine separately, then we could have a good bike project. A nice 600 cc 35 bhp bike :D

guys..dont want to spoil the fun. Looks like a promising car but I found 2 greats drawbacks.
1. Dicky cant be opened (its sealed). Therefore, rear seats have to be pushed aside everytime mechanic has to access the engine at the back. This is going to spoil the rear seats big time+ working space is so constrained, wonder how anyone will be able to work on the engine.
2. engine is noisy. The word just got out that the peculiar sound it produces can be quiet irritable.
Ofcourse, airconditioning is pretty good and the car is peppy (heard from the horse's mouth).
