Test-Driven : Tata Nano!
(
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-drives-initial-ownership-reports/89667-test-driven-tata-nano-9.html)
I think we should wait a few more months for the common man to give his verdict. Until then all we are doing here is mere speculation.
I read that the Nano body is not welded. but bonded together by glue.
I couldn't really make out the complete facts behind this.
Has the panels been bound together by bolts/ rivets and glue to cover the gaps?
Someone please shed some light. This will be a very big indicator on the build quality and how the car will hold up after a few years of abuse.

Nano as a car makes me feel a bit odd. Its just too minimalistic to say the least. Why not give better quality where it matters like tyres, engine options, prope wiper system, a rear hatch that can open. |
You've asked for a lot of stuff including engine options. Obviously you are not part of the target audience which will consider the car, and thats fine because you are in a minority - you have your own vehicle(s), you have a computer to access the net and post your comments on a vehicle that you are not likely to buy, etc. This is not the Nano's primary target audience.
There was a time when I had no vehicle of my own and even a second hand two-wheeler for Rs.15k was wishful thinking. I then bought my first 2-wheeler for about 40k - there were no financing options then. We lived off that vehicle for a while, riding long distances on it not entirely because of the fun element, but because that is what we had. We rode in the rain and caught the flu, we rode in summer and had sunstroke.
If at that point somebody had come up with an option that said you could, for instance, pay Rs.25k upfront (or less) and pay the rest in installments I would've jumped at the chance. Why? Because I would be stretching myself for that 25k too!
There are several million people out there in similar circumstances, and hopefully this will address their aspirations. The last thing we would want to see is people who dont NEED this vehicle buying it too - now that would become a parking and traffic nightmare.
As for a rear hatch that does not open, why the hell would I want to open the rear hatch when I cant put anything in the rear, because my storage space is in front and THAT can be opened?

The world did appreciate many cars, not all of them were the best.
The point is this, the Nano was designed from grounds up with on parameter in mind " Two wheeler upgrade ". This shows in such a minimalistic car nano happens to be. A rear hatch does not open, a space saver, a puny engine and I seriously doubt the dynamics of this vehicle.
Its not a big step ahead from my point of view. |
aaggoswami sir: I'm sure not all are driving the car they wish to possess. We all make some compromise and buy a car which will fit our pocket. For a middle class family which finds it difficult to commute in the poor public transport or in a two wheeler (over loaded with kids and luggage), Nano will definitely be a boon without any doubt.
So its the theme (target buyers = common men) which makes the Nano a great CAR.
I think we all must applaud Ratan Tata and his team for their stupendous work in bringing out a true common man's car.Even though Nano might not meet all your expectations as a car but it does all that it is supposed to (a cheap common man's car which even a two wheeler owner can think of buying).
Car makers across the world dismissed the thought of 2500$ car. This includes the likes of Honda and Suzuki.Ratan Tata and his team worked hard to make this a reality. All this inspite of major hiccups at Singur.
I remember Mr. Tata say in an interview that one night he was coming back from somewhere and it was raining heavily. He saw a family of four (including two children) travelling on a two wheeler. He then thought of offering a low cost 4 wheeler alternative for this target segment.
Nano is India's answer to auto makers worldwide. Our auto industry has come off age, and its high time that the world starts noticing India.
A big thanks to Mr. Ratan Tata for making all of us proud.
whatever, it has been marketed well and it has touch common man emotions. I am 200% sure it will going to be hit. Lets cross our fingers to see booking numbers.
I know Mr. TATA is very smart, if he is not increasing car price he knows ways to take money out of common men pocket.
Excellent review.
Great to see Mr. Tata putting India on top of the automotive scene worldwide. Hats off sir, great job.
There are people i know in UK and US who just can't get enough of this car or even the concept of a $2k automobile.

1) Ask people who've had a crash in an indica (their smallest car till the nano), they'll tell you.
2) Have you ever been to the grocery store and opted to buy Dhara's vegetable oil than Safola (just an example)? Are'nt you compromising on quality wrt price? Dude the price will go up if your above said "better quality stuff" is to be put in place.
3) With all due respect to you i think as all have said that you should TD the car to know the true picture. As far as your presumptions and assumptions go, appreciate the work of the people who are hired by tata. Maybe you will be stumped at the work done with a price constrain in mind.

1) I know people who had their indica failed in middle of nowhere because of reliability issues.
I know a family who lost lives of near and dear people because the steering of Indigo failed. Indigo was not even one year old.
2) Its true, but the car has to be safe and some minimum quality bits are expected.
Its like buying 600 dpi mouse and 800 dpi mouse. The latter will cost more, but will function better. The former will not be able to do its job properly for long.
3) I understand this point, but again common sense strikes in. Nobody can deny the high car with small wheels will have more roll. Is this expected from a modern car ?
There are other things alike which are not good.

The point is that the designers had to work backwards from the price criterion of Rs 1 Lakh - which is not usually the case for other projects where the price would be more in a range of values. The Nano does have several design aspects, some of which you have already mentioned, to reduce production costs and limit the price. So...
And I shudder to think of future servicing at TASCs - the rest of us non-Nano chaps trying to wade through the sea of Nanos' that will undoubtedly clog the Tata workshops!:Shockked: |
Correct, they worked backwards, that is the error. I doubt the integrity of the shell in case of crash, handling, etc. The real answer lies below.

Yes, I completely agree with that. PS is not a necessity, but a luxury. Isn't it the same case with AC?
Perhaps thats why we have three variants of nano where PS and AC aren't aqvailable in base variant.
And yes one can replace PS by better tyres and better engine in same cost.
Indeed nano is minimalistic car. It's just designed to get you from point "a" to point "b". Why don't you do it this way,
1) List all the base hatches (A and B Class) available in india
2) Put each of them against "nano" for comparison
3) List out the things you are getting more from nano (if there are) and call it as "ListN"
4) Estimate prices for the particulrs in ListN and call it "DELTA".
5) Now list out the the things which are not there in nano but in the competitor and call it as "ListO".
6) Now calculate EXTRA = PRICE OF COMPETITOR - (PRICE OF NANO - DELTA).
7) Now decide how much sense it makes to pay EXTRA for ListO particulars. If it makes sense, clearly Nano isn't a big step ahead. |
AC has become necessity thanks to pollution.
I will be doing it once I am able to spare some more time from my project.

This brings me to real point. A person who barely manages to fuel his expenditure of bike will buy Nano for using it as a city car ? The maintenance will be surely more than bike, FE will go down from 60 to 20-22. Do you think he will still use Nano for city driving ?
What he will end up doing is this : using Nano as highway car.
Those who have one or more car and are using their present cars for city transport will buy this car for using in city. The target audience will end up in trouble big time on highways.
About me being in target audience. I am still in college. I will in the target zone, but will not buy this car becasue I will have family only when I am able to pull up a nice big house and two midsize cars. This is the best thing to do rather than buying Nano as a compulsion which is consequence of a big mistake of having wife + 2 kids.

The matter of fact is this : How do you think this car wont be misused ? And what are the consequences ?
A car is something that I can take along on highways and cities with family.
Nano is purely a city car, nothing more. I feel that those who barely manage to get Rs. 60K bike will not use nano as a city vehicle. This defeats the purpose of the car.
Now what could be better :
1) Tyres : The bigger wheel will have less vertical movement = better ride quality. For a car this tall, why cant we have 13" tyres atleast ? 12" is too much cost cutting.
2) A simple and ultitarian car's engine must be easily accessible. Is this the case with Nano ?
Rs. 2 use and throw pen will be used more roughly than Rs. 100 Parker.
Nano will be used more roughly and wear and tear is also going to be more owing to low running costs ( people will use car more ). And the engine access is restricted. Those who have opened engine at home will understand how the comfortable access to mill can be helpful.
3) Two cylinder engine. Make it three and I will agree this is a car.
4) Dynamics. The car is tall on small wheels. The target audience will have to be aware this thing is totally different from two wheeler.
Kudos to TATA.
Reminding you that they announced this car(1Lakhs) almost 6years ago, and even after 6 years they managed to stick to their commitment.
Last couple of days there is series of programs/documentary on Different Vendors who helped TATA to Build NANO is shown on TV.
Really mind-blowing.
Just for Eg. (As shown in the documentary) LOCKs of nano: cost somewhere around RS 100/- :Shockked:. Where as for other cars they starts from approx. Rs 900/-.
We can sense tremendous amount of engineering in each part of the car.
Hats of to Mr. RATAN TATA & his team.clap:
Many thanx for TBHPian who took a test drive and wrote review of our beloved NANO.

There's quite a bit more that you probably need to learn in another college. One called life.
PS: I would normally never use such a statement out here, but when you see comments and views that are totally out of touch with reality I believe extremes are sometimes justified. The admin team here may not agree, but I will take my chances.

Nano is a landmark in auto industry in the years to come , brilliant out of the box thought process & fuel efficiency at least cost . Mr.Tata you have done india proud ..
Awesome scoop and nice review ....
Might be a bit off topic, but

Eh, what do you mean. What exactly is it about a 600 dpi mouse which will lead it to a premature death? I bought a logitech MX 310 (800 dpi) - cost 400 and an MX 518 (1800 dpi) cost 1300. Guess which died first ? the high dpi one. And a few of my friends have all faced issues with their higher Dpi mice - razers, logitech G5's and MX 518's , especially the new 1800 dpi ones. the older gen 1600 dpi MX 518's are still around though.

then obviously you're not in the target zone. the target zone is for the indian who cannot even dream about owning 2 mid size cars, forget planning about it

Have you tried riding a bike 4 up on a highway, long distance? and not with three of your friends.Think one fat wife and two pesky kids. I think a car is far more preferable

So you would avoid procreating to avoid the trouble of transporting your family? A very noble thought, and thanks for removing yourself from the gene pool :)

Till we bought our car, when we were growing up, for trips like shopping and going to church etc, dad used to make two trips on his bike. One to take mom, and then me + my sister. So effectively the mileage was 1/3rd since he had to travel 3x the distance. I think a car would have been infinitely more preferable.
Yes, my dad would certainly buy it and drive it in the city
