Re: 2 BHPians and their photo-trip to the 150-year old Rosary Church, Shettihalli

Great to see you back in action!!! The church itself is quite unique in terms of its size and architecture, considering its age and location. Wonderful!!!

It was the building of the Gorur dam nearby which led to the abandoning of the church. The reservoir submerged the church and surrounding villages and they had to be shifted. The newer church is located in Shettihalli village.

From what is known this church was abandoned due to Gorur dam project. The dam was built across the Hemavathy river in early 1900s and forms the Hemavathy Reservoir. 46 villages were submerged by the dam waters.
Picked up a few random pictures from the internet which shows the church submerged.

Beautiful pics, Riju and Maggie. Thanks for sharing.
Somehow the aura of those overcast skies makes for a beautiful setting.

Once more to add to my list of nearby places to visit.

Wow Riju, those are some lovely photographs and the place looks very promising for photography. I've heard about this place before but never given a serious though, but now I think I should. When I saw the thread I was thinking you guys might have went there around Nov-Dec timeframe but it was just last week and still no water is surprising. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Will give you a call soon for information if I decide to go there

Absolutely amazing photos and story. The photos look straight out of a fairy tale. I guess using those UWA lenses played a lot of role in getting those captivating pictures. A normal zoom wouldn't have attracted the attention of the user so much. Also, it's hard to believe that the church gets submerged in water. We should be preserving our heritage such as this, or else in future even this won't remain. This church reminds me of the pictures of Parthenon. Parthenon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amazing place. Had heard of it some time back, but it slipped out of my
registry. Its back up there again ! A picture perfect spot for good long drive.

Currently I am taking my 101 on the wide angle lens. Just added one to arsenal. Then I am on the road again. Beautiful place and captured perfectly!

We went there last Sep on the way back from Sakleshpur - attaching a couple of pics...the church was submerged and there were coracle rides around the church for Rs 20!

@Riju and thMAG - loved the pictures of the church. Looks like some forlorn haunted castle, rather than a church. Looks like an interesting place to be part of some films. Is it not submerged in water only during the summer months, i.e., March to June?

Hi Rjstyles

hats off to you for the wonderful pictures. I dont know if its just me, old ruined buildings look mindblowing with grey or dark skies in the background. Some of ths pics with the sky and clouds in the background just takes us back in time. Awesome photography and a very good option for a short trip in and around Bangalore.
