Re: Pre-Loved '97 Premier Padmini S1 - From Nasik to Bangalore

Brilliantly written and photographed, acquisition story of Classic Padmini S1!

The particular picture of S1's speedometer in your 4th post, instantaneously took me 15-16 years in the past.

Also, 3 persons seating on the front seat now looks so amusing!

Re: Pre-Loved '97 Premier Padmini S1 - From Nasik to Bangalore

The other thing that was in my mind was to refresh all the fluids and to ensure we comply to what Behram sir has always adviced:
1) Engine oil
2) Gearbox oil
3) Differencial oil
4) Radiator water

I brought the oils from Shell. 20W50 for engine oil and grade 90 for Gearbox and Differencial. I can never forget Behram sir saying never use 140 grade for differencial, it will be equivalent of grease. If I remember correctly 140 grade is used only for steering wheel.

As usual, my pit stop would would my local trusted mechanic Murthy. He isnt educated and learnt stuff by being a helper to mechanics since childhood and operates on his own since couple of decades. He had a bad phase in life with ill health and just few months ago bounced back and is fit and healthy now. The garage he used to operate from had to be vacated and now he works from a footpath. He has always been my best option, though he doesn't have sound technical knowledge. He would listen to me and do whatever is asked for and is ready to learn. The straight forward works, he is good. If something requires technical knowledge to troubleshoot, thats where we hit roadblocks. With too few mechanics who are ready to work on classic cars, I need to improvise myself by learning as much as I can and help Murthy with necessary information/troubleshooting.

All the oils were drained for few minutes and fresh oil along with oil filter was installed. Murthy also cleaned the brakes and asked me to check for the right pull at hard braking. I still couldnt get a chance to try it.

The gasket under the head cover was leaking and it was replaced too. The top hose was in very bad condition ever since we started from Nasik. I still wonder how it could withstand the 1100kms. The top hose wasnt available over the weekend and hence the radiator flush and hose replacement was kept pending.

Re: Pre-Loved '97 Premier Padmini S1 - From Nasik to Bangalore

Arun and me visited Stephen's Square for used spares. The shop typically looks like this will all kinds of spares! New to the shop since few years are ECU units, mainly from Daewoo and Ford scrapped cars.

We found a good Sports steering of Italian make, the popular MOMO. This steering is an absolute necessary for me to stop circussing for ingress. The original large steering also fiddles with my legs and felt to awkward.

We also got a new type speedo console with the clock as I just love it and gives a bit of 118NE taste.

Then I needed to get the healdlight issue fixed. I visited the local auto electrician who fitted the roots relay kit we had purchased in Nasik.

I also got a 12V socket fitted, something thats absolutely necessary for people with smart phones.

Most intended works are now complete. Arun says until we give it a good wash, remove all stickers and stick our old sticker of #36 and RALLI ART, its not yet complete. I promptly agree.

At the end of the day, S1 parked at home for the first time!

Waitaminnut!

An S1 thread that doesn't even mention the lovely exhaust . This car has among the best sounding exhaust notes from the mass market segment.

Posting a sample for now. Funkykar, you better come back with your own video soon

This certainly is the best sounding exhaust from the S1's. Unfortunately, my mechanic found that the muffler on my S1 is empty. Hence, it makes a very throaty sound, it isnt too bad. I will get my own video soon and post it to compare

Now that some essential things are taken care of, its time for a good wash. From the time I have previous owned classics, I find that most water wash center's no more does greasing. Finally, after a good search found one center near office that did greasing.

Unfortunately, they use the creame colored grease and not the black chassis grease Behram always advocates.

Finally in the evening, Arun barges to my office to take the car for stickering. Both agree that we should make it look like my earlier S1 and we refer to some old pics and get stickering done the same way.

Re: Pre-Loved '97 Premier Padmini S1 - From Nasik to Bangalore

One thing I missed telling on this thread: The S1 gave a cool 20kmpl from Nasik to Bangalore. We were pretty surprised all the time looking at the fuel gauge as we estimated it to deliver 10-11kmpl (just because it was an unknown entity). We doubted the fuel gauge and whenever we visited the petrol pump got to know that it really was delivering excellent mileage. The best mileage my earlier S1 gave was 21.5kmpl.

Yesterday, Murthy was able to get the Top hose and is replaced too. Just cannot believe we did 1100 kms with such a bad hose

Worn out hose, yet served us well!

I have added surf excel to the distilled water after draining the existing water. This was suggested by BHPian Manishalive many years ago. The brown rsty water suggests I need to flush atleast 2 more times using this technique.

New hoses in place. Now the S1 can go another few 1000s of kms!

Distilled water!

Got a chance to install a pair of fog lamps too.

All my updates are now up-to-date. All that the S1 now needs is a good photo-shoot, Team-Bhp and Fiat 1100 Club Bangalore stickers. Off to ordering a set from TBhp store right away.

Whoa boy,
Passion, Enthusiasm and hardcore Fiatian is what comes to mind after going through the entire thread in single breath.
Love those PUNTO rims - What is the PCD?

I suggest that you buy a color matching spray paint (BOSNY) can, give those rusty spots a light scrub with SCOTCH-GUARD (Kitchen use) and then spray the spots to your satisfaction.
She will love you for this extra TLC.

Guys, I need some help here with the NOC procurement. Anyone can help me with a reliable and trustable RTO agent in Nasik? This would be of great help.

My column shift bench seat S1 has the simpler older style speedo, without the clock, and it has been on the car from new.

Thanks a lot! Surely will consider enhancing her looks. All Fiats have been 98PCD throughout. Right from 1100 all the way up to Avventura. Only thing that can be a concern is the center hole which may be at times small. Punto 14 inch rims on Padmini is perfect fit. Palio Stile 13inch rims for 118NE needed filing the center hole by about half mm.

Thanks Karl for the info. At first we thought owner may have changed the speedo. Its been a coincidence that every S1 I have seen had the meter with clock. I think only the base variant had the older type meter.

That was an excellent punishment that Behram imposed.

Sure Ilango, will get that rectified. I hope you wouldnt loose too much cash if SpriceJet doesnt fly you. If you happen to drive, am sure you will love it. Will see if I can accompany you for your drive partly

Hoping to see you with your NE.

If you happen to fly, please do plan for a drive to Bangalore along with Behram sir. I press for harsher punishment. Both Ilango's NE and Behram sir's Super Select should come to Bangalore

Dear Karthik - thanks for providing clarity on Punto 14" wheel rims. What is the wheel rim offset? In Padmini it is +31 mm, in 118NE it is +37 mm. Offset is the dimension from the mounting face on the wheel rim on the brake drum to the wheel rim center line, please measure and tell me.

HaHaHa, you don't seem to have not seen my left hand drive thread. I will prefer to bring the left hand drive! Please help me with the color choice for the car, I am completely confused!

Best regards,

Re: Pre-Loved '97 Premier Padmini S1 - From Nasik to Bangalore

The 118 NE. Such pure nostalgia. We were just in college when a friend of mine got one in his family. We were underage then but could not wait to get our hands on the car. We did two trips to Lonavala and back on the Old Pune highway, before we turned 18, with a driver of course. We loved it. it was all Fiat Premier before that for us!

The day we got our licences (we were more or less born around the same time) we ensured the driver sat in the passenger side and did the same road. Wow, each of us took turns. Such a high. Funkykar is the man ! :-)

Congrats Karthik on this excellent buy. Wish many wonderful miles on this car. Well written and enjoyed the thread.

By the way there is a service guy close to Arun's home who also does the grease work (same colour grease though)

Cheers
