I have been to hills, sea, forests but never been to a proper desert. Have planned for Rajasthan earlier too but the trip never materialized. Thank god it didnt, as it was not a road trip! lol: So this time with a proper planning me and my wife decided to go ahead for a Rajasthan road trip in our trusted Etios.
A couple of week before the trip, got my car checked up at Toyota. Thankfully all were fine.
Bought all the basic essentials for both of us and our car!
Got all the hotels booked in prior.
Went through few travelogue's in Team Bhp. Took suggestion's from Bhpian- SS-Traveller, Me_Sid, XetaGlGRocks, Anirbanz, Predatorwheelz, JKDS, 1100D, Blackpearl, Aj-Got-Bhp, Arindamxeta, SouraC, PapaBravo, Lovecars21, //M, Desertking and few non bhpian's too. I wont thank you all because your help deserves much more than just a thanks. The suggestion's were really very useful to me.
After all these planning finally the itinerary of our trip went like this-

Day 1, Kolkata to Kanpur - 958km, 14.5 hours
The packing was done the previous night, so in the morning we can hit the road as soon as we get ready.
The loaded Etios boot.
Its always hard to sleep the night before a long drive. Every time i plan to sleep but i end up being awake and constantly check the time and this time too it was no exception! By 3-30am me and my wife both were ready, we bid adieu to my parents and hit the road by 3-30Am. Leaving parents behind for a trip always feel bad but this trip would have been very hectic for them.
We took enough food so we can munch and drive. Hence no real food stop was needed, our only stops were bio breaks and refueling breaks. Else the drive was pretty much non stop.
In 1 hour 45 minutes we crossed Durgapur, Asansol came up in 2 hours 30 minutes, Aurangabad in 6 hours 30 minutes, Varanashi in 9 hours 30 minutes, crossed Allahabad Bypass in flat 12 hours and reached Kanpur in 14 hours 30 minutes. By 6pm we checked in to our hotel. Without any sleep last night and after driving for 14.5 hours i was enough tired to have an early dinner and call it a day.
Day 2, Kanpur to Jaipur, 522kms, 10 hours
After a sound sleep the alarm rang at 7am. We got ready and hit the road by 9am. Agra came up in 4 hours, FatehpurSikri in next 1.5 hours hour. Soon we stopped for a lunch break, as by then both of us were hungry. Crossing Agra was a nightmare as there was huge traffic jam. Some how avoided the jam upto some extent by following the local auto's through narrow streets and we were finally able to cross the bottle neck, which caused the jam.
From Fatehpursikri roads were excellent and we reached the out skirts of Jaipur by 6pm. GPS led us our way to our hotel which we reached by 7pm, driving through the city traffic of Jaipur for the last one hour.
This decorated auto greeted us at our hotel entrance!
Seeing the Jaipur traffic and after driving for around 1,500kms in two days we decided to hire a local cab for the next day Jaipur sightseeing. For city runs my wife was my navigator with google maps on duty. So hiring a cab means its a rest day for both of us. :) Googled about few local travel agents, called few of them, took the rate and fixed one. By 10pm we had our dinner and called it a day.
Day 3, Jaipur sightseeing.
The Dzire cab came to pick up from our hotel at 10am.
Our first visit was to Albert Museum. Taking pics by Dslr inside the museum was not allowed, but one can take pics by mobile.
From out side its an architectural marvel and from inside its like any other museum where the things of historical importance are showcased and kept with utmost care.
Next destination was Jantar Mantar.
From Jantar Mantar we visited Hawa Mahal. Hawa Mahal is located inside the Pink city of Jaipur. Surprisingly i found the majority of the houses to be painted in Orange rather than pink!
By 12-30pm we finished two of our sightseeing points and the 3rd was the very famous Nahargarh Fort. Its located on a hill top and gives an amazing view of the Jaipur city.
Just after the entrance of Nahargarh fort there is the Seeshmahal and wax museum which was inaugurated in December 2016. The entry fee per person is Rs400. But no photography is allowed inside. So i cant share any pics from inside, but the visit was worth it.
A pic from out side-
Pics from and around Nahargarh Fort-
By the time we completed seeing the Nahargarh Fort we were already hungry. Our driver took us to a restaurant to try local Rajasthani cuisine- 'Dal Bati Churma'. First time i realized veg food can be this much tasteful!
Post lunch we went for some shopping in the local market and then our next destination was Amber fort.
We were pleasantly surprised to see a Cafe Coffee day branch inside Amber Fort, that too in a scenic location! Couldn't resist ourselves from having two cold chocolates!
Day 6, Jodhpur to Jaisamer 278km, 4 hours + Kuldhara and sam Sand dunes 89kms. Total 367 kms
We started from Jodhpur at 10am and as soon as we hit the highway the terrain started out to be more and more barren. The road is mostly single lane but enough wide and well maintained to maintain a good average speed. We reached Jaisalmer war museum by 2pm.
Pics from Jaisalmer war museum.
We started from the war museum by 2-30pm and checked in to our hotel in another 20 mins. Had lunch and headed out for Sam. Before heading to Sam i asked for a package at Sam from the hotel. They gave me a contact no of a person. He asked for Rs 2,700 for camel ride, Jeep ride, dinner and local folk dance including a visit to Kuldhara village. It seemed to be fair enough.
I picked him up in my car and our first stop was at Kuldhara Village. The details about Kuldhara village-
Quote:
'Kuldhara is an abandoned village in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan, India. Established around 13th century, it was once a prosperous village inhabited by Paliwal Brahmins. ... Gradually, it acquired reputation as a haunted site, and the Rajasthan State Government decided to develop it as a tourist spot.'
|
Our camel ride was scheduled at 5-30pm, so we left Kuldhara village around 5pm.
Few pics from the camel ride.
After 30 mins of camel ride a white Thar picked us to take us to the sunset point, driving through the sand dunes. It was a bumpy ride but it was fun. The drivers drive faster than required just to add some thrill to the tourists!
Pics during sunset from the jeep ride.
A pic from the local Rajasthani folk dance.
Post dinner the drive from Sam to Jaisalmer was beautiful. It was pitch dark and we could see a very clear view of the night sky. As we were alone on that stretch i didn't dare to stop much and do some night photography. So after just stopping for a couple of minutes in the middle of nowhere we drove back to our hotel. After a day with lot of activity we were dog tired and called it a day.
Day 13, Ranthambore to Agra, 322km in 5 hours
I got the tickets booked for viewing the moon lit Taj through my travel agent. It had to be bought online in two days prior to the date you plan to visit. So i had no hurry to reach Agra. As soon as i reach hotel a person from the travel desk will hand over the tickets to me. So lazily we started around 11am from Ranthambore.
Till Dausa roads were single lane and from Dausa we were connected to the Jaipur - Agra highway.
These sights were common on the road.
By 3pm we crossed Fatehpur sikri and we were on the single lane road before Agra. When our hotel was at a distance of just 30 mins according to our gps, bad luck struck. There was a turning and on the turning a Swift was overtaking a Tata Ace but another smarty on a Grand i10 decided to over take that swift on that turning! :Shockked: He was literally head on with me. He had no place to swerve left, so all i did was braked hard and swerved to my left as much as possible but still to my bad luck my right side ORVM brushed with the Grand I10's ORVM and the glass came off.
Now driving on the highways without a right ORVM glass is literally risky. So stopped my car and searched the net for a local Toyota service center in Agra. Found Sunny Toyota at a distance of 23kms from the spot. Called them up and they reassured that the right ORVM glass was available. Reached there service center in another 40 mins and got the glass changed in just 15 mins. They were professional and fast. :thumbs up
From there hotel was 18kms, so reached hotel in another 30 mins.
The view from the Hotel terrace was really nice. The terrace had Taj view.
By 6pm the travel agent guy called me to handover the tickets to view moon lit Taj and explained me the formalities on how to proceed.
Our slot was from 8-30pm to 9pm. We reached gate 1 office by 8pm. It was a 3 mins walk from our hotel on this beautifully decorated paved road.
The rule is to check in 30 mins prior to the scheduled time. They did all the security checks and took us to TAJ in there battery operated bus.
View of Moon Lit Taj.
Plan for the next day was to drive till Varanashi.
Day 14, Agra to Varanashi, 586km in 7 hours 45 mins
After breakfast we left Agra by 9am. Was following GPS and surprisingly instead of connecting us to Nh2, GPS connected us on the Agra-Lucknow highway on Fateahbad. After driving for 48kms on this 6 lane expressway we took a left ramp and connected back to Nh2 approximately 50kms before Etawah. This road saved a lot of time skipping the traffic of Tundla, Firozabad and Shikohabad. We crossed Kanpur in 3hours 15 mins and in 6 hours we crossed Handia which is 500kms from Agra. Handia to Varanashi hotel took us another 1 hour 45 mins. By 4-45pm we checked in to our hotel.
An aerial view of Varanashi.
Evening was spent by local shopping.
Day 15, Varanshi sightseeing
It was Holi, so instead of driving to Kolkata on Holi we decided to stay back at Varanashi. Me and wife had our fair share of fun playing Holi in the terrace.
View from the terrace of locals playing holi-
In the afternoon we decided to go for a boat ride to see the evening Arti at the famous Dashashwamedh ghat and see the other ghat's of Varanashi including the Manikarnika ghat which is known as the burning ghat.
We got a boat for Rs 800 and we were on board by 5-15pm for the 3 hours boat ride in a full moon afternoon/evening.
Pics from the boat ride-
Post boat ride we tried some famous local sweets in a local shop, came back to hotel, had dinner at the roof top restaurant and called it a day. :)
Day16, Varanashi to Kolkata, 647km in 10 hours
This was the last day of our trip. After 16 days, going home felt really nice. We left Varanashi by 8pm. To our surprise the roads were devoid of trucks as it was the day after Holi. I was driving at around steady 120km/hr and was covering the distance pretty well. By 1pm we reached Bagador just before Topchachi and had our lunch at Ashok hotel.
Jharkhand was red with Palash.
Just after lunch i got a call from my dad that he and mom are coming to Panagarh to receive us in our Figo! It was a pleasant surprise for us. Etios met Figo at Panagarh and we stopped over for a 30 mins coffee break.
Post that we stopped at Shaktigar for a Langcha break again!
From there it was a straight drive to home. Finally reached home by 6pm with 5,173km of memories. :)

Comment- We stayed there in package which included stay, safari and food. I inquired them 4 months prior to the trip and asked for jungle safari in Gypsy between zone 1-5. In the beginning they told me for that i have to pay the advance in 90 days prior to the trip. I did the same. When i inquired later they told they cant guarantee us that we will get between zone 1-5 in gypsy. Later when we reached they told they will give us safari in zone 6 & 7 in gypsy, for zone 1-5 i need to go in a canter. I opted for the Gypsy. When i asked them why am i not getting zone 1-5 in a gypsy instead of booking in 90 days advance, they gave us stories like that needs 10-11k bribe etc etc. This part was disappointing with them. Rest the stay, food, location were all good. But do not rely on the safari part on Tiger Machaan package.
