Some people feel the rain; others just get wet - Monsoon drive to the Western Ghats

Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet.
- Bob Marley

Inspiring Quotes like these from Bob Marley were buzzing in my ears every monsoon and this time I decided to go and feel the rains. It all started over a WhatsApp Group Discussion and fellow bhpian laddz1121 offered me to stay at his home in Belgaum and visit the western Ghats, it was the last push that was required.
After crossing 1L kms on my Duster the attention shifted towards the new Interceptor 650 and Duster was primarily doing city runs and it was about time that some attention to wear and tear parts were given before taking it out for a highway run. Spent few hours in planning and it was time to hit the road. As per initial plans it was supposed to be 1 car and Pradeep (Laddz1121) would join with me in the Duster, but he couldn’t resist the Highway run and at the last moment when I was expecting to see him in a taxi, I found him waiting for me at the Designated Toll Booth in his Skoda Rapid

Our Plan was to start late in the Evening on Friday the 19th July 19 after finishing mundane office chores and meet up was planned at the Tumkur Road Nice Road Exit. And that’s when we started rolling. After an uneventful drive to Belgaum via Davangere(Dinner Meet up with a dear friend from the Team Duster India Group, Ramesh G D).

Post Dinner we maintained steady speed and we reached his home at about 1:30AM and the plan was to catch up on sleep and get up early.

...Continued

Day 1: It was decided to travel in Duster keeping in mind what the Monsoon can throw at us in obscure locations that we intend to visit. We left early from Belgaum and our first stop was at a Place called Gurukrupa Hotel in Jamboti and we quickly finished an elaborate breakfast of Poori Bhaaji and Poha with steaming hot cup’s of Tea.

The Route was planned and our first destination was Chikhale and then try and see if we can make it till the falls. Route Map Link

Once we reached the Spot we realized that the rains and tractor movement has dug deep ruts into the soft soil and after few attempts to veer around the sticky patch decided to abandon the plan.

Even though we had to abandon visiting the Bora Falls in car we made it up by absorbing the local vistas that the rain kissed surface had to offer and utilized every moment in capturing delightful moments in frame.

Godachinmalki Waterfalls was our next destination and it was absorbing to watch the water flowing off the table and the gorging down to the alleys. This is where we encountered our first drizzle of the day and we enjoyed a quick sip of tea at the waterfalls and moved along towards the Magnificent (?!)Gokak Falls.

Little did we know that this would be our biggest disappointment. Since the Gokak falls is controlled by water discharge from the Dam it was unfortunate for us to land up on a day where there was no water flowing from the dam.

Without wasting any moment we decided to quickly head for a Biriyani Lunch at Niyaaz.

And we made a full fledged attack on the food that was served and planned to visit the Hidkul Dam and its surrounding. Little did we know that this would be the highlight of the day!

... Continued

We roamed around the Hidkul Dam and that’s when Pradeep decided to call his Sr.; a veteran of Hidkul Dam Area.

And it was indeed a location that we never expected we will get served on platter. A complete desolate location to have a fort and a View point overlooking the Water Body.

It was serene and just the right time for sunset and the celestial bodies decided to offer us a delightful display of light and color. Let the images do the talking as we called it a day…

re: Some people feel the rain; others just get wet - Monsoon drive to the Western Ghats

Day 2: After an absorbing day we planned for an even earlier start and first up we landed up at new Grand Hotel for a Poori Bhaaji session with piping Hot Tea. After filling ourselves we moved on to the route that we intend to cover for the day. Map Link Here

Pre-Amboli falls was the first planned destination for the day and it was the place which just set the tone. Wet, Moist and Lush Greenery all Around.

Freshly prepared Kanda Bhajji (Onion Pakoda) just on the main road was the right thing to have in such a weather and we did good justice to it.

Next up we stopped at Nangartaswadi Temple & Waterfall. And as history goes he was the man who founded the road through which we travel now and the temple and the adjacent waterfalls stands as a dedication for his deeds of yesteryear's.

Amboli Ghat Waterfall is one of the most visited places by people from 3 states; Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa. The arrangement made by local administration was adequate in terms of handling vehicle movement and this gave us a first-time chance to visit a waterfall perched on a hill by an Auto

Even though it was rushed the crowd was well managed by local law enforcement and all of us had a pleasant visit to the waterfall and in the process managed to get ourselves drenched completely.

Came back to the parking spot where we had parked our car and after finding the direction that we need to follow we started off from the busy hustling and bustling tourist spots to desolate stretches.

re: Some people feel the rain; others just get wet - Monsoon drive to the Western Ghats

Kumbhawade Falls or Baba Falls: Till sometime back the path to this fall was through a private property and it since the Govt built an access route for tourists to visit the place has earned a corner in the minds of an informed tourist. After we parked our vehicles at the designated road side we had to make an entry at the ticket counter and had to walk / trek for about 2.5kms in order to reach the main falls. That stretch which we were to cover in feet had multiple other medium sized waterfalls and the entire place was covered in mist and continuous drizzle kept us in good company. Anyone visiting this side of Western Ghats must visit this place. It enthralled all of us, mainly due to the location and the mist and rain foreplay.

Heard a lot about the lush green cover that the stretch towards Pargad Fort transforms into during monsoons and it was time to witness and feel the Rain! A small video clipping from the Dash-cam will do more justice to the location along with few images than thousand words can describe…

We had one of the most amazing lunch at a small eatery by name Hotel Sumit. A simple meal comprising of Roti, Egg Masala and Mutton Curry brought so much joy to the hungry and rain-soaked travelers that made me fall in love once again with the Marathi Cuisine.

Our last destination for the day before returning to Belgaum was a little off road track and driving over an irrigation canal to Swapnavel View Point. The journey to this spot was very engaging and the complete cover of Mist and Rain transformed the place completely from what we have been privy to courtesy the social media.

It was wrap up time and before we start our long drive back to Bangalore we headed back to Pradeep’s place and we changed our water soaked cloths into dry clothes and was treated to some home made delicacy by Aunty. Even though I am not a connoisseur of sweet but the taste of Shrikand will linger with me for a while..

A long highway run in the late rainy evening and we were back to Bangalore in the wee hours only to cherish the fond memories and rekindled the old saying by Rabindra Nath Tagore.. “Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.”

Amazing photos soumobakshi. Specially the ones of the Hidkul dam. I have used the Amboli Ghat multiple times on the way to Goa via Nipani from Pune. Thank you for the hidden gems and they are surely worth a separate trip.

I was using my One PLus 7 Pro for all pics. Have been running on Good Year Wrangler for 70k ++ Kms. This is my second set. Other than being noisy after you cross 20k kms i didn't find any reason to complain.

Best time to head-out if you have a Monsoon ready vehicle.

Amazing! Beautiful landscapes thoroughly enjoyed especially watching videos.

A lot can be done from Bangalore in a weekend. Generally most of such plans turn out to be hectic whereas your travel appears relaxed. As you rightly say “feel the rain”, soak in the spell of monsoon. Thanks for sharing, your log would have inflicted many I guess. Two long weekends coming in August, getting itch to make the most of them.
