Chitkul is the last village on the Hindustan-Tibet trade route and is a popular tourist destination. The village is home to a number of temples, including the Mathi Temple, which is said to be over 500 years old. Chitkul is also known for its clean air and its traditional lifestyle. The village is also home to a number of festivals, including the Chitkul Holi festival, which is celebrated in March.

Chitkul is now the "first village of India" (a termed in the government program Vibrant Villages. The holi is celebrated in Sangla not in Chitkul.
