Thanks for the blog, both Udaipur and Mondarmoni beaches sound exciting. Is the road from Digha to Jaleshwar still in a bad shape. When I went in end-Dec 2005, there was hardly any road all the way from Bengal-Orissa Border to the NH at Jaleshwar.

I am not aware of the Digha-Jaleshwar route, but the present condition of road from Panskura (a few kilometers after Kolaghat) to Jaleshwar is absolutely fantastic if one can manage to take the proper route to bypass Kharagpur. In the past year I have travelled three times on that route and have managed to miss it twice thanks to my superior navigational skill . Only once while going to Hyderabad I was able to take the bypass and it saved hell lot of time.

@theBagchi - thanks for the blog. very nice details of the trip and road conditions.

One can also drive from Udaipur to Talseri along the beach, both being quite scenic.

The Digha to Jaleshwar road is narrow and has broken tarmac in places. It does get atrocious during the monsoon time and the following months.

Most of the roads in Orissa is under construction.
And presently in bad shape but in few months from now noone can complain.

Digha to Jaleshwar might be in bad shape but KGP to Jaleshwar is fantastic

Nowadays, they dont allow to drive on the Udaipur beach. This was my experience during my visit in June, last year.

The road to Talsari was also in a very poor state that time. Not sure whether things have improved now.

Here's one pic taken in that beach area:

Absolutely in Shambles! Tried it at the end 2006 on a casual try to Chandipur (The distance between Digha and Chandipur being very close for a bird to fly across). Changed mind midway.

There is a added boon, in taking that road, is that you also bypass the horrible Baharagora.

Is this the Belda route you are talking about? Unfortunately for us, on one occasion even that was moon like.

.
What a relief that you can bypass Baharagora - used to be a terrible traffic jam spot earlier.

How is safety on the road after Kharagpur - used to hear of dacoity on teh road to Baharogara (on NH5, not GQ).

You can only do that if you are going south, say towards NH5. If you are going west, which you would need anyway as the Keonjhar district offers some interesting places, there is no option rather than Baharagora. It is still not recommended to cross that section at night. Although we did exactly that many years back and we still have our 1100d intact.

Beach hard enough for Sumos to drive as well. But as you see from Blackpearl's post that its not necessary to have a SUV to do the journey. Only during monsoons you may need the services of a 4x4.

Yes Mandarmani comes before Digha (U have to take a detour b4)

Its a virgin resort without peddlers, car paint scratch creating urchins , cows, cow-pats, idiots packed in Tata Sumo playing loud music, old aunties bathing in petticoats (what a scene!) and other irritating creatures.

I did this route yesterday while coming back from Digha,
Just to explore , route was Digha - New Digha - Orissa/WB
Border - Chadaeswar - Jaleswar NH 60 crossing - Kharagpur-
Kolkata.

Road till Chandeswar is Fantastic, in Between lot of Construction
work in Progress, 60% is good, 40% is like S.O.M. total distance
Digha till NH 60/Jaleswar 40 Km, it took 60 minutes on my Scorp.

Small car / car with low G.C. should avoid this route for now.
once its completed it will be a fantastic route to drive on,
very low traffic , nice green villages . anytime it will be better
than narrow Kanthi Nandakumar Route.

Anyway I enjoyed this route.
