Deepak, I went through your Gallery. I must say the Monument Valley pics are nice. Infact, judging by the shadows and their length, I must have visited the place at the same time as you. The effect of sunlight through an almost clear sky onto the mites was really breathtaking. Looks like a different place altogether. That is the view I thought I will get. However, I got an entirely different subdued redness, might not have been the real thing but still very different from what we have seen before.

However, running through your galleries, I found this :-

Something that owing to the tight schedule, I had to let go. It was a big miss I should say.

Yes Rudra-da, we spoke about it, you will get the pictures, and going by your little play on two snaps, I can't imagine what you could do with them. However my camera does not support RAW.

We had taken it to a "scenic drive" location called Talimena scenic drive. The start of which was 220 mile away from Dallas. A travelogue never got made as here too it was cloud cover that ruined my intentions of capturing the fall colours. But that scenic drive is 60mile thru the Rich mountain involving countless vistas on the way. The travelogue of that would have been named something like 60mile in 55 minutes through winding mountain roads of the Rich mountains.

Thank you. The rest has to be typed in, a huge pain but also a pleasure as one actually gets to relive the moments in the mind.

Waking up that day we knew we had a lot to cover, but because of the cloud cover the previos day at the Monument valley, we decided to drive down there again in the morning to see if our luck was any better that morning. A quick drive Northwards gave us glimpse of a little sunlight on the mites, but mostly in the direction one does not want it to be on.

We head back and our GPS was asked to find "Page, Arizona". Enroute there was a sense of Deja vu from the countless simulation games having taken inspiration from roads such as the ones we were driving on.






Some 140 mile later involving a spririted drive, interrupted by rule obeyers, we were beginning to see the Coal-fed steam power plant at Page. We were actually passing by the Antelope canyon. But given our tight schedule, we did not have room to change our plans, so drove into Page and straight onto the Glen Canyon Dam visitor center (Carl Heyden visitor center). Right from there you could see the Bridge across the colorado, just downstream of the controversial dam.
(While taking this photograph one slip and I would have vaporised on the way down - note the full-size rafts on the river to have an idea of the depth)


Note the difference of water levels (I will post another snap in a later post showing pickup trucks at the bottom)




But the real beauty lied on the other side. The reservoir of the above mentioned Dam gave rise to the Lake Powell. With its natural scenery doing justice to what fantasyland could be. The variation of colour on the ground itself was amazing with a deep blue lake, giving rise to array of water activities.





From there, we had the option of driving first to the Rainbow bridge, the worlds largest natural arch prior to driving down to our next destination, but, doing that would take away atleast an hour from our later plans. Given the fact that, I had the opportunity to see some natural arches in places like the Mackinac Island in Michigan, I decided to give it a miss. We decided to hurtle our missile southwards towards Marble Canyon.

However, on demand from my travelmates, I will be including Las Vegas for 1 night and GC (north and south rims) for another 2 days.

If that is the case, suggest watching this space for whats about to come, it concerns people who would want to do the two rims in one go. But I need to be back after some necessary errands.

That was an earlier generation Pontiac Grand Prix. You would know my take on such Pontiacs!

Anyway, the drive from Glen Canyon to Marble Canyon demands a separate post. Qualifies as one of the most scenic places I have driven on, including a very scenic drive from Fort William in Scotland to Isle Of Skye with the Mountains on one side (with snow caps in some places) and the ocean on the other.

Coming back to this trip, like before, this drive was getting better all the time. Whatever I had seen earlier was being dethroned. First, cutting through a mountain, you get to see a wide open plain, next moment, you are on the plain seeing not only the red-mountain you just drove on, but light and shade of the vermilion cliffs on the other side. The very fact that this road would bring up the best of speed freaks irrespective of whether or not they are on a tight schedule. The dark black road leading into an amazing scenery.

Wow, this is a fantastic travelogue. Majestic car in a majestic surrounding. I did these parts in a dull Buick Century. Besides, I wasn't serious about photography then.

I guess you were running too tight on your schedule, there is always a next time. May be you can club it with a visit to Sedona and Canyon de Chelly ( this is the place where western flicks like Mckennas Gold were pictured).

Despite all the negatives you say about the clouds, I think they add to the drama in the pictures. What say Rudrada? Also, did you use any UV filter? I think not and I think you should have. Please correct me if I am wrong
