How can one get the permits for the Gangtok-Zuluk-Nathu La route for non-Sikkim registered private vehicles?

There is a form that one can collect from the local district authority. Post that you will also need to get some police permission. In my log i have mentioned whom to and where to get the permissions from.

Having said so, it will always be a struggle to get the necessary permissions. Always keep 2 or 3 days buffer for permissions as they are tricky to get.

Also there has been a new ILP rule, which i am not aware about. I think after the chinese aggression on the lines of Arunachal has called that for. But if you go to Sikkim, do visit Nathu la using the old route through the village reshi (pics in my log).

Have fun and all the best.

cheers,
ac

Re: Mhawk goes from Vihar, tulsi lake (Mumbai) to Gurdongmar lake (Sikkim)

We are planning to travel from Mumbai to North East in the month of March in our XUV once all the roads within NE open up. Have more or less figured out the travel itinerary within North east and will be covering the following areas

Gangtok-North sikkim
Shillong-Cherrapunjee
Kaziranga
Tawang

However, have not been able to figure out the best route from Mumbai . Am struggling with it and have got varied opinion on it.

Should we be taking the:
Mumbai-Hyderabad-Cuttack-Kolkata-Siliguri route
or Mumbai-Delhi-Lucknow-Gorakhpur-Purnea-Kolkata-Siliguri route.

In both the routes is there a way to bypass Kolkata ( read it somewhere) and will it help. What is the road condition?Would really appreciate help on this and any other suggestions as well with regards to the entire trip.

This will require quite a long holidays as all these places are not that nearby. Also, you will have to get necessary permits.

First option : You don't need to go to Kolkata. You can either take SH7 to Burdwan & proceed ahead or take NH6/NH2 towards Kolkata. THe second route will also byepass Kolkata. For more on this route do go through this thread

Second option : Purnea to Siliguri does not have Kolkata in between in the first place. Infact it is a big detour. From Purnea you enter Bengal near Dalkhola & proceed to Siliguri

PS : Using this section would give you more replies

Lucknow onwards, there is dual carriageway with bad roads for ~20/30 kms on UP/Bihar border @ Gopalgunj.

Lucknow to Siliguri & Calcutta to Siliguri are seperated by over 300 kilometers but shall take almost similar time. Take your pick.
