Re: Decade old Nostalgia Relived "Tiger's own land"

The elephant and the tiger in the same frame. Pictures may not be very clear as they are very old.

Camouflage! Do always look out for hidden surprises in the tall grass.

Sighting a tiger from an elephant is an adventure by itself.
After all a tamed elephant still stays an elephant , and any animal is unpredictable tamed or not.
Being on a wobbly ride on the elepant with a tiger below watching you, is a scary and exciting experience . I have done this safari with my year old son tucked in a shawl.

Regards.

Re: Decade old Nostalgia Relived "Tiger's own land"

One morning we started our safari driving into the morning mist of the jungle that makes it even more elusive, making us wonder what it hides within.
While driving for a while in the chill we came across an elephant which was tracking a collared tigress in a nala. He signalled to us that she was walking towards the road ahead. We rushed to that road and waited. Soon she emerged lazly out of the bushes and looked at us.
It just did not matter, she was in a mood for some sun, giving us the opportunity of seeing the lazy side of her.

Re: Decade old Nostalgia Relived "Tiger's own land"

Thank You,
I have been on elephant safaries many times in mudumalai and enjoyed it, always in mind that afterall its an elephant we are riding so nothing can really go wrong , unless the elephant himself decides to bring us down.
It was this video you have attached that has instilled the fear in me. Since then ,safaries to sight a tiger have become scary.

Re: Decade old Nostalgia Relived "Tiger's own land"

Kanha National Park has a variety of antelopes.
One can often see huge herds of spotted deer, the sambar deer being the largest indian deer.
The jewel of Kanha would undoubtedly be the Barahsingha also called the swamp deer.
Posting pictures taken during our various trips to the national park.

In continuation to our various sighting, these are the pictures of a tigress that walked right in front of our qypsy and dissappeared into the forest.

Coooolcat21,
Nice photographs, love your passionate write up on jungles and wildlife.

It is always a great feeling seeing photographs or in real life, a nursing tigress (your pics.). A spark of hope of the next generations of the Indian tiger in the wild against the numbers being systematically decimated.

Sir,
Thank you for your kind words.
Amazing observance sir, the reason why your comments are so highly valued.
She was a nursing mother of 2 cubs. We were told that she had mauled one of the mahouts men, who generally go out by 3 am looking for the elephants in the jungle. He went too close to the cubs in the tall grass of the maidan and she attacked him. They also told that he was actually killed and she refused to leave his body, then the other elephants had to come and drive her away to retain the body of the mahout.

Re: Decade old Nostalgia Relived "Tiger's own land"

Thanks coooolcat for raising our humane senses towards conservation of wild life via your amazing post.
With all available resources, I think now it time for us to wake up from our ignorant slumber and force authorities and ourselves to conserve this natural heritage.

Tiger is a very elusive and enigmatic animal and uses it energy only to feed itself but we in the name of wild safaris , hunting poke into his domain (1 tiger has a 10kms approx domain where he never likes to be disturbed) causing man animal conflicts. He is a very vital link in maintaining the very delicate natural balance in the forests that is equally important for human being survival on this planet as well. Though its stare might give goosebumps and shivers down the spine, but his eyes very well say that how poor is his condition we humans have made just for a getting a pose of him. Once lost, nature shall take (or may not) infinate time to create this majestic animals.

Though my comments here are not to discourage any one from a safari, indeed its a good way to actually understand the way animals live and understand their importance in nature, I would humbly request all nature lovers here to do a bit extra in conserving this endangered species. If you have sources and power connections (to concerned babus and politicians) do something like:
1) Adopt animal ie pay an amount that would be used for animals food, medical care for a day or week.
2) Force authorities to restrict people movement in the core areas of forest. There are many violations where drivers take you to that special spoke for a quick buck.
3) Stop or reduce elephant safaries. They are most frightening ones for both elephant and tiger and unsafe for people riding them.
4) No food / canteens inside the jungle.
5) Closed safari cabs because people make enough noise / litter junk to irritate the animals.
6) Not more that 15 jeeps per trip.
7) Let people contribute to research for the growth of not only animals but entire flaura and fauna eg: Plant a native tree or pay to get one done.
8) Prevent grazing and fodder collection. Some might say it is livelihood but I shall say that is not the only livelihood left. Some people turn to greedy monsters when they get to know how much a pelt or skin of deer or tiger costs in the market.
9) Stop others to make / do trouble like making noises or flashing camera or throwing stone and bringing it to notice with concerned authorities so that culprits can be heavily fined.
10) Lets learn from mistake of other nations and steps and strict rules they have made to conserve wild life.

There can be 100 more ideas bhpians can pour in here and even correct the ones for better that I posted above. Already enough damage has been done by some so called maharajas, politicians and foreigners alike just for fun or to show off their bravery or to fill their castles with animal stuffings, wiping out 80% of them just in last 80 years. A single species missing in the natural chain can cause havoc on others. Now its time for us not to do the same mistake and save these helpless wild animals before they say us good bye forever.

Some of the Coooooooooooooolest pics of the wild from Coooolcat. Enjoyed each post of yours thoroughly. WOW! is all I can say, when I see your pics. Waiting for more of your pics and adventures. I've noticed that these pics spread across a decade. It would be really great, if you could date tag them. Just for information.
