What happens to 'New Tyres' exchanged straight from the showroom?

Related Thread: What happens to used tyres?

I exchanged my OE GoodYear Tyres to Yoko A drive straight off the showrooms. The car had done 14kms when the tyres were exchanged. I got around Rs.2500 off the Goodyear tyres and paid the balance amount for the A drives.

The question I had was, will the Goodyear tires be sold as seconds, or will they still be sold off as new ones to unsuspecting customers? If they are sold as seconds, at what price are they sold? Is there a place which specifically deals in these type of tires? Requesting the Tyre experts to throw some light on this.

I don't believe anyone in India is that honest to sell these tyres as seconds when even the blue mark present in new tyres are present on those 14 kilometer run OE Good Years. They will be washed clean, dried and sold of as brand new tyres for the difference in price between what he brought it from you for and the price of new tyres.

I agree and that was exactly my thoughts as well. However, If these are sold for lesser price than the original new ones, I believe that is as good as being 'honest'. If we know of such places, wouldn't it be a better place to source tires from? Like, someone who gets a OE 15" and wants to upgrade to 16" immediately is a good option for someone who is looking at buying a better 15"tires.

I wish TBHP has either a request thread or an Exchange thread. I know the mods have already stated they do not wish to have these threads, I am still letting my wish known. Please delete if inappropriate.

I also have the same view as yours.
But lets hope there are some honest dealers out there.
Found an interesting news news here.

re: What happens to 'New Tyres' exchanged straight from the showroom?

I have bought 'exchanged' tyres for our old swift. Remember the swift comes with 165/80 tyres and they are one of the most commonly exchanged tyres.

If memory serves me right, we used to get it for some 30-40% cheaper than new ones.

That link is absolutely true and the facts are worse in India of course. As I have personally observed, other than driver induced error, most accidents almost always are caused directly or indirectly because of a faulty tyre! Most of the times it's the conscious decision of the owner/driver to carry on with multiple punctured or bad condition tyres without realizing the immense risk involved.

All I can say to such maniacs is, people, it's ok if you don't care for your life as it is yours, but hey, this involves the lives of all the others using the road man!!

Please read the Tyre manufacturing date information before purchasing and do everybody a priceless favor!

I wish this happens with all the tire shops! Might be a crude(weird) method, but once when I changed mine, I tried to get the new tire smell and look for any stone impressions.

re: What happens to 'New Tyres' exchanged straight from the showroom?

I remember my friend telling me that he got a set of 'exchanged' tyres+rim from a SX4 for his Lancer, from a shop in Lalbagh (this was few years back). The price he paid was definitely lesser than the price for brand new tyres of the same make, so yes we do have dealers who sell the exchanged tyres at lower cost.

re: What happens to 'New Tyres' exchanged straight from the showroom?

Almost everything happens. Some sell as brand new, some honest dealers sell them as 'exchanged / little used' tires. I have seen few taxi operators approach dealers to get exchanged tires. Dealers do sell them for a little profit over what they paid the customers (applicable for few standard size tires only) And there are also few tire dealers buy the exchanged tires from A.S.S at a lower cost, wash them, cover them (with the wrappers taken out from other tires) and sell them as brand new ones.

Most of the times we don't depend on A.S.S to get the tires and they are not very keen in selling tires as well.

re: What happens to 'New Tyres' exchanged straight from the showroom?

A noob question - Do they sell these tires back to the car dealers or the service centres? I mean the dealer could benefit by sourcing such "new" tires from the tire dealers for a cheap price. I was also always wondering what they do to the "new" stock tires from a new car; when they are exchanged straight from the showroom.

I think there are many people out there who wouldn't mind paying something less for these as good as new tires, even though they might be compromising on safety.

re: What happens to 'New Tyres' exchanged straight from the showroom?

Usually sold as almost new seconds at 30% to 50% discount.
Two years back I had sold my Innova to my driver who re-registered her as a Taxi. I still hire the same car from him when needed. He usually buys such tires at a discount from tire shops in Pune.
Most reputed shops sell such tires only to known people after informing them that they are exchange buy backs from people up sizing, or going in for more premium brands.

Re: What happens to 'New Tyres' exchanged straight from the showroom?

It all depends.

As a customer, you want the best value for your 50-100 kms run tyres. If the dealer is offering a fantastic price, you are 100% guaranteed that the dealer will be slapping on a few stickers, polishing the tyre and selling it as a new tyre.

If however the dealer is quoting somewhat on the lower side, there are chances he is going to sell it honestly as a "used tyre". Most of the time this is bought by people who have damaged one or two tyres and dont want to spend much. Occassionally someone buys it who says he doesnt have the budget for brand new tyres or someone who is looking for an amazing deal.

Removed tyres are very good VFM if bought from a trusted tyre shop.

Rahul
Could you please ask your driver the name and location of the shop.

Last time I asked a tyre shop guy, he told me that they sell such tyres for maximum 10% less than the price of new tyres.

Re: What happens to 'New Tyres' exchanged straight from the showroom?

Tyre shops - like most small retailers - are very street-smart businessmen. Most will sell these as new. Personally, I'd expect a small discount, but would otherwise consider these 10 km driven tyres as new only.

There's no 'one such place' or dealer specialising in them. Go by the law of averages = any big tyre shop with the highest volume will also have the biggest number of exchanges.
