BBS Wheels files for bankruptcy for the 3rd time

Car alloy wheel manufacturer BBS GmbH has filed for insolvency in Germany. The announcement comes in the year of the company's 50th anniversary.

The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has been claimed to be one of the reasons for the situation of the company. The bankruptcy was necessary due to the due to the sudden cancellation of confirmed payments due in the upcoming months.

In 2007, BBS went through bankruptcy and was purchased by a Belgian company. Another bankruptcy occurred a few years later. Since 2015, a South Korean company called Nice Corp has been the majority stakeholder in BBS.

It is speculated that as the bankruptcy has been filed only in Germany, the company could undergo reorganization. According to BBS, production will continue for now.

Thomas Oberle and Marc-Philippe Hornung have been appointed as insolvency administrators for the company.

Sad to hear that. The copies of BBS wheels are still trending. While the copies are selling, the original files for bankruptcy.
Fond of this one though.

A rescue seems unlikely in the automotive space, in these 'Covid times'. BBS has some fantastic designs. Personally, I just love these alloys (Madhus stocks them in Bangalore), and hope and pray that I get the ones I have shortlisted (for my Nexon) - on the cheap.

Do note that this is a "restructuring" bankruptcy. The company won't disappear altogether.

An interesting post from Jalopnik:
Quote:
It’s of note that BBS Japan is a separate entity from BBS Germany, and BBS Japan is completely fine. It’s also BBS Japan that makes all of the super nice forged wheels and owns the motorsports division.

All of the top-end BBS wheels like the FI-R, the LM and the various motorsport wheels are all made by BBS Japan. BBS Germany makes the slightly less nice Flow-Formed stuff like the CH-R, and their budget cast wheels.
