Re: Weird pattern developing on the sidewalls of all 4 tyres of my car - What is it?

I am not sure what's the reason behind those scuffs, but I can help you eliminate under-inflation or tire-rolling. Use a crayon chalk, and mark all four tires from the top tire edge to the middle of the sidewalls. Then, drive like you normally would (including spirited driving, or taking turns fast). Now inspect the chalk marks again. If you see the marks rubbed out, that means you are underinflated, and hence your tires are rolling on your sidewalls. This is a popular technique AutoX users use to check optimum tire inflation during auto sports.

See this linked video to see what I mean.

I really doubt if you are underinflated, because I raced with underinflated tires, and my rolling marks did not look anything like yours. So it could be what others have suggested. But by this way, you'll know for sure that it isn't underinflation.

Re: Weird pattern developing on the sidewalls of all 4 tyres of my car - What is it?

The patterns are consistent with debris rubbing on a rotating tire. But they are extending to at least half the height of the sidewall. I'm sure you'd remember if you drove on such roads.

but this looks like some grass, maybe stiff twigs brushing along the sidewall as you drove. They move in brushing arcs as the same point of the tire rotates around comes full circle. I have a feeling this is also a combination of several phenomenon. The wet/oily spots also seem to be a separate thing altogether.

I have a feeling you've driven through oil floating on water or something like that as another BHPian suggested, because of these marks,

It could very well just be brake dust and water, but just another possibility to consider.

I'm sure these aren't curb marks, it's an S-Class after all. But just something that happened at high speed before you could realise it. You're talking the world's best car here. Cocooned and all from the outside world.

The only other picture of scuffing like this I could find on the internet is this:
nothing else anywhere. Seems to be very unique.

Re: Weird pattern developing on the sidewalls of all 4 tyres of my car - What is it?

The rear left tyre of my 13 months old Honda City has also developed same marks. The car has run 29500 km. Other three tyres don't have these marks. As I am traveling in Spiti Valley now, the car has travelled on bad roads. One more thing that might be relevant: it was serviced a week back and they cleaned the tyres and applied some black stuff on the sidewalls. Did anyone find the cause or solution?

In my case, it happened when the car was driven over parts of the road filled with jelly stones (repair works). Nothing to worry.

These marks developed while I was negotiating the the treacherous roads of Spiti Valley. I am sure of one thing that I did not rub against any curb. However these marks disappeared themselves after a few days.
