Continental unveils new tyre concept made from recycled plastic bottles & dandelions

Continental has unveiled its new sustainable tyre concept at the ongoing 2021 IAA Mobility Show in Munich, Germany. Dubbed the 'GreenConcept', the tyre is said to be made using a mix of renewable and recycled raw materials.

The tyre manufacturer states that the GreenConcept uses organic materials such as natural rubber from dandelions, silicate from the ashes of rice husks and various vegetable oils & resins. In addition to this, the tyres also use recycled materials, including processed steel and carbon black. The GreenConcept is also said to use polyester from recycled PET bottles in the casing of the tyre.

Along with the use of renewable and recycled materials, the tyre concept also comes with a special lightweight design. This allows the tyre to have significantly reduced weight, while also lowering the rolling resistance by up to 25 per cent (internal analysis). Continental claims that this reduced rolling resistance helps extend the range of an electric vehicle by 6 per cent. The GreenConcept tyre is also said to feature renewable tread, which can be re-tread up to 3 times.

The world premiere of the Continental GreenConcept tyre is in line with the brand's plans to use 100% sustainable materials in its global tyre production by 2050.
