This looks like a wide gash. Depending on the road surface the car is being driven and also what the roads expose it to, it will be recommended to replace it. You can also take it to the OEM and get their view on it. However, to avoid any road hazards and prioritizing life, its best to let it go.

Re: Tyre cut : Fix it or change it?

Tread damage on a relatively new 12000 km run tyre.

Took my car for alignment and wheel balancing yesterday. The technician while removing the tyre for wheel balancing found and brought to my notice a damage on rear right wheel which looked like a part of tread has been scooped out.

There’s no air leak from the damaged section. The guy running the place suggested repairing the tyre.

Contacted a friend whose father used to run a tier retreading business and now owns a tyre retailing and alignment shop. He assured this can be easily fixed by heating and adding tread to damaged section using some specialized glue and the tyre can be used without any worry after repair.

Should I go ahead and fix it or replace it with a new one ? Please share your valuable opinion.

Even if you superglue a piece of tread onto it, it will fall off after some time especially on our city roads or on our highways at those speeds. I guess you can try doing this for a while.

But it is definitely safer to take the hit and change the tyre completely especially if the car is being driven a lot on the highways.

As per the picture attached, it’s clear that the cap piles are exposed. Tyre's Speed rating depends on that.

If your driving pattern is within city max 50/60Kmph, then you can run it (Not recommended though). However, if you intend to run these on high speed expressway, then it’s better to change them. Re-treading is just a sham business for cost cutting.

Indian road infrastructure is fast changing and Having good quality tyres is the first thing. A bad engine won’t harm you but a bad tire will.

Re: Tyre cut : Fix it or change it?

Is this a matter of concern? Please suggest. Happened while exiting the parking lot at low speed. Tyre scraped against an improperly placed manhole cover.

Car model - Hyundai Alcazar 18-inch wheel. Vehicle is Feb 2023 manufactured.
Can I simply glue it back?

Looks a deep cut.
Yes you can superglue it but it wont last.
Best to change the tyre. Your car is an premium car capable of high speeds. Dont compromise on the tyre condition. Too dangerous.

Yes, any cut on the “sidewalls” should be a matter of concern. It’s the area of the tyre which is least reinforced and is solely responsible for holding the tyre pressure.

That’s why the sidewall damages to the tyres are not repairable.

Re: Tyre cut : Fix it or change it?

It appears to be serviceable to me with no sign of sidewall 'puncture'.

Cut is approx. 3mm deep. But it is on an embossed area which I believe is for looks purpose only. So, actual cut could be 2 mm.

Any idea about the thickness of this area?

No idea about the thickness and all. Personally I would buy a new tyre. I absolutely will not take a risk especially because as you know, when the car is driven at speeds on the highways the tyres build up heat which causes the air inside to expand. Over time this poses a risk which Im not willing to take.

You have bought a car worth nearly 20 lacs. I suggest you spend Rs 10,000 on a new tyre for your own safety and peace of mind.

Of course you will be able to get a certain value for the damaged tyre so you can set that off against the new tyre cost.
