Uneven wear & tear of front tyres on my OHC

Hi Everybody

The front tyres on my OHC wore out much faster than the rear tyres (pics pasted below). I have Michelin Pilot Preceda 195/60/R14 in my car and they have done between 10k-15k (not too sure but definitely within this range). The uneven wear & tear (i guess) started around 4 months back.

Issue (1) "What caused this uneven wear and tear (premature balding) and how do i prevent it in future?"

My mechanic felt that the front wheel bearings could be causing the problem. Subsequently, I had the entire suspension and brakes overhauled (overdue anyway) and now the tyres need to be replaced as well.

Issue (2) "Which tyre is best suited for my requirement"

My car is a 1997 type 1 OHC done about 80k. The current Michelin PP's are the 3rd set of tyres running on the car. The first set was Bridgestone, second set was Falken (the car is a hand-me-down and bro doesn't remember any details about the tyres). Budget per tyre is 5 grand. Priorities in order are reliability, performance/handling, comfort and life. I checked out Michelin Pilot Preceda and XM1+. I guess PP is suited towards handling and XM1+ is suited towards comfort. What other tyre brands/models would you recommend?

Note- The (worn out) tyres which were originally in the front are now in the rear and vice versa. The pics were taken after the rotation.

Please advise.

When was the last time you rotated the tires? How many kms since then and how much has these set run.

Your uneven wear has to do with alignment and air pressure more than anything else, hows your driving style? Lil on aggressive side

Guilty as charged.... I drive a bit on the aggressive side!

Don't remember when the tyres were rotated last. However, i felt that the tyres started wearing out on an exponential basis and before I could even realize it, they were bald. Oh and BTW, forgot to mention, the car is predominantly driven on a light load and I maintain tyre pressure of 28psi.

The increased front wear will always be there since it's a Front Wheel Drive car and most of the wear and tear is concentrated on the front tyres. That is also why timely rotation (5k kms interval) is absolutely necessary to maintain even wear between all 4 tyres.

Thanks Iraghava! I have been complacent about rotating the tyres. Lesson learned.

Also guys... any suggestions wrt my tyre buying decision? I would like to get the tyres changed as soon as possible and get the alignment done (to complement the suspension overhaul).

hi friends
I am currently using goodyear eagle nct5 195/55 r15 tyres in my ohc. I think there life is over now. which tyres should i put now . I find goodyears a little bit noisy and harder . Can i upgrade to 205/55 r15 or 205/50 r15.

Avoid Goodyear, they are noisy as well as braking is not so precise.
I would suggest you YOKO/MICHELIN/BRIDGESTONE

Its common for fwd cars to wear out the front tyres much faster than the rear if not rotated at regular intervals.

I generally rotate them every 5K kms and invert them once every 20K kms (this is to ensure that the inner and outer sides of the tyre get equal wear).

invert them?
as in switch the left and right wheels?
[This way the tyre rotation will reverse.]
or just switch the rubber, so that now the inner side faces the outside?

By invert i mean rotating the tyre on the wheel to get the inner side outside. Cars usually have slight negative camber, so the inner side starts showing more wear, by doing this you get even wear on both sides of the tyre.

If you want 205, then 205/50 R15 is the correct size. You can go for Yoko S drives.

195/55 R15 is also the correct size. You can go for S drives, Maxxis, BFG Gforce Sports, etc...

Yoko S drives would be nice.

I have 205 60/R13 Falkens on mine.
No problems as yet and the ride's much smoother than before.

I want new tyres for my car which brand should i go for and what size 195/55 or 205/55 or 205/50 .here is the price of various brand tyres

yokohama s drives-rs4900 205/55 r15
yokohama a drives-rs4100 195/55 r15
bridgestone turanza-rs 4400 195/55 r15
other chinese brands like infinity, westlake for rs2400 - rs2600 for 195/55 and 205/50 respectively

@hondaxxxx: as per my knowledge, 205/50R15 and 195/50R15 are the correct upsize for an OHC.
I'm running 205/50R15 Yokohama S.Drives on my OHC and they are VERY grippy. Can't comment on Michi / Bridgestone not had them on my car.
but i've got no intention to switch from the yokos. I'll get a new set when these wear out.
