i have been doing Tyre rotations on my santro every 5000 : the front 2 tyres would go to the respective rear and the left rear would got to the front right side, and the right rear would go to the front left side.

if this is done your tyres will wear evenly

All 5 tyres (or at least the 4 in use) should be of the same brand, size, pattern and age. If you employ the mechanics idea you'll never acheive this. What if the original pattern or brand of tyre is no longer available? You'll have to use a mix. You'll also never be able to upsize.
