Mr Dhabhar, i think in mumbai, chor bazaar is the best place to find things for the cars... from a to the z. Recently a friend of mine picked up a Landcruiser Sunroof for 2k , just serviced it a bit since he is an electronic engineer himself, and he has fitted the same on his sierra,

What a Deal... i feel, anyws coming to the point, kurla cst roads also has some great and useful junks.

Yeah egangsta - I know - you told me when we last met. Maulana is a little piece of history himself.

Best regards,

Can someone help me out with how much to pay for parts at Chor Bazaar. I went there this summer and was happy to find some parts for my Morris Minor. I was quoted 600 for a pair of taillamps and 200 for side badges. Can someone tell me if thats fine or if Im being ripped off.

I was just joking !! Actually its a nice business idea to sell some of the stuff online. I have seen people in UK disassemble cars and sell the spare parts on ebay.

Dear Shyam - I saw a Standard 10 bonnet badge with Maulana during my last visit.

Dear Khanak - 600 for the tail lights seems a bit high, 200 for the monograms is OK but I look at it this way. If I really want it, then only I ask. Otherwise I just look around (I have this nasty habit of spotting exactly what I want), then I haggle a bit (they will come down by around 50 to 75. Coming down by 100 or more is now quite rare), but I don't miss it, I just get it. Once paid for, it's over and done with. I don't think about it.

The latest at Maulana's - I believe Maulana was not well (his age must be past 90 now) and now there is another guy sitting there but this fellow has hiked the prices to ridiculous levels. He wanted 500 for a WIAA badge. Anyway's almost all original monograms are now sold off. Maulana (he himself is an antique), was back at the shop when I visited last time (I wonder what his real name is).

Want Hella Comet 500 lights ? - Look around, I know who has them and where the "godown" is but they are all rejected stock so be careful of the quality. The mountings are cracked. The prices are high. I might as well get new ones from Opera House.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Mayapuri of Delhi!?!

Hey Guys! Is this place aptly described as 'the Mayapuri market' of Delhi? Here in Delhi, if you want to find anything for your vehicle, however old or new, the place to go to is Mayapuri - also called the 'Junk Market'.
I had visited the place when I had wanted to swap my Tata Sierra engine for a Toyota 3C engine. I had even come across an almost new 'Pajero' engine there but the sardarji told me that it could not be fitted in a Sierra.

Chor Bazar of Bombay is the biggest (not maybe size wise but definitely stock wise) iYes bigger than Hyderabad and Delhi.
One can find a lot of stuff here but must know where and from whom to source, else the middle men crop up at alarming rates.
Depends on what one is looking for, there are dealers who specialise in old or new stuff. By new I mean new-like.
It is getting pretty difficult to source things even now. I saw a pair of 55 Millicento tail lenses for Rs 600/- something which should not be worth Rs 100 for both and that too at today's prices but its just a matter of demand and supply. People from out of town come and pay a king's ransom for such rare stuff and the dealers make it rarer by the day, fictitious of course.
For a newbie, the place is a strict no no as you Will be ripped and probably given off wrong and maybe even non working stuff at a very high price. There are regulars such as myself and a few others who have built a rapport and that rapport I guess makes them show us a little courtesy, even price wise. Remember, there are no free lunches and this maxim holds its worth of gold in the Chor Bazar.
For the uninitiated to the place, Stay away. Those guys can smell a green horn a mile away and you Will be detected.

slightly OT but have you guys observed old Monograms of companies like Plymouth, Fiat, Chrysler etc at the back of Autoricks. Have spotted such autos both in Mumbai & Pune. Not sure how much genuine are these but most of them look very close to the originals

Thanked: Once

I have myself sourced the engine for my FSAE vehicle from mayapuri.
They have all the engines lying around.
The guy even claimed to import engines on demand.
The guys names are salim/alam and there shop is near a masjid in mayapuri.

OT the engine we used was a 3 cylinder unit dating back to 1982. codenamed F5A.
It had turbocharger(one of the smallest turbo units i have ever seen) and turbo intercooler. and guess what guys the engine mated perfectly with our very own 5 speed maruti 800/ alto/ zen gearbox perfectly to the last bolt and thread.
