#55 1937 Riley - Restoration Photos Taken This Week

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/images...s/Clapping.gif

I had a chance to see some miraculous work done at Sanjay's works these past four days to get this car ready for the Rally. It's a good thing I don't put any money on the car not being ready!

I'm sure you will agree with me!

And at the rally ground the owner told me it was restored two years ago ...... !!!

In fact virtually all the cars whose barebone photographs have been presented here by John were present at the rally ground, with their chromes sparkling and dazzling - of course by courtesy of Mr Ghosh and his team of mechanics.

Amazing that a rear engined Merc is in India afterall. This is either 130H 0r 170H Google it and the story will there. Probably the orly one in India. They are seen abroad, but not too common. Concept was similar to the Beetle.
It will be nice if someone from Kolkotta can tell the story of this one.
For me its new, maybe all of Kolkotta already knew about it.
Another thing, the headlights on the Riley are too big, disproportionate. Even if original, still too big. Somehow big headlights suit SS, Lagonda but not Riley or MG.

I was just reading up a little on the SS1 tourers as I was curious about the louvered bonnet on Mr Bose's car

Apparently a batch of SS1's were prepared for Alpine trials. These featured (apparently) louvered bonnet tops, side mounts in wheel fenders, wiper motor off the windscreen run through a cable.

Now Mr. Bose's car has the louvered bonnet. Curious to know how the car acquired this hood. If it is an Alpine edition then the other elements characteristic of the car prepared for racing don't add up.

Lets have the owner (with Ritayan's help) enlighten us.

The ss100 apparently had the louvered bonnets as well as the dozen or so SS1 Alpine tourers

Sudipto thanks for the effort. Lets make that effort to slowly catalogue some of the cars. I will dig out the article on a well known Calcutta enthusiast of yesteryear and post details.

Its just so wonderful when you encounter a family that has lovingly retained their car for so many years as Mr. Ghosh has. Do tell Mr. Ghosh that my family too has a 1929 LaSalle since new and still in great running form
Check my posting on the prewar jags.
Kanoria put the louvers in when he was converting it from a sedan he informed me.

It is a most interesting car. Can you share some history on this particular example? What condition was it acquired in? Any pictures before the restoration?

Well this car is owned by an uncle of mine.He had bought this car sometimes in the 70s-80s and when he went to buy this car he saw that there was another car same model but a convertible which was not for sale. Then that car (convertible) went missing.Anyway then he brought this car to my father's place to restore and then this car was painted turquoise and white. Then this car was running. After that one year when this car was taken for the Calcutta vintage car rally and my uncle, the owner of the car poured cold water on the engine and the head split into two.then he got the head repaired by someone else locally but it did not last. After whcih he brought the car back to my father again. After 5years he was very lucky and got another head from the scrap market in calcutta along with more spares.Since there was no other car known except these two cars as in the one in the picture and the convertable,it is believed that the other car bad been cut. Then this car had been done up again before this year's calcutta tolly car show. One day before the tolly show the car was been driven from my father's place to my uncle's house the engine bearing got ciezed. The car did not make it to the tolly car show. The following sunday was the Statesman rally for which my father had promised to get the car back on the road.He went and saw that the engine bearing had siezed so he changed it and then drove it everyday that whole week for about 50-60kms everyday. This car was then driven by my father to the statesman vintage car rally and it won the prize for best on the road section.

Hope that is enough if you want to know anything more please do let me know.

Thank you
