Artificial Intelligence (AI) -based cameras have been deployed on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. The new cameras have been installed at 52 locations along the access-controlled e-way as part of its Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS).
The AI-based cameras will not only monitor vehicle speed but will also track violations such as failing to wear seat belts, using mobile phones while driving, and improper lane discipline.
Additionally, all cameras and toll booths will be equipped with automatic number plate recognition to issue e-challans to those violating traffic rules.
On average, around 40,000 vehicles use the expressway on weekdays, which increases to around 60,000 vehicles on weekends. Currently, LMVs are restricted to 100 km/h, while the speed limit for heavy vehicles is 80 km/h. In the ghat section, vehicle speeds are restricted to 60 km/h and 40 km/h, respectively.
The new ITMS is expected to enhance road safety and streamline traffic movement along the busy route.
