Audi to drop powertrain-specific numbers from model names

Audi could continue using the 'RS' prefix for its high-performance models in the future.

According to media reports, Audi will soon simplify its variant nomenclature - dropping the numbers associated with the powertrain output.

The current nomenclature was rolled out in 2017 and consists of a two-digit number between the core nameplate and the engine type. For example, based on the power output and powertrain, a 2024 Q5 is currently offered in three variants: 40 TFSI, 45 TFSI and 55 TFSI e. The first variant denotes 201 BHP, the second corresponds to 262 BHP, and the third is a 362 BHP hybrid.

Reports state that the recently unveiled Audi Q6 e-tron will be the first model to move away from the powertrain-specific naming system. The variants of the electric SUV will feature a simplified nomenclature. This means the two-wheel-drive version will be called 'Q6 e-tron'; the four-wheel-drive variant will be named 'Q6 e-tron Quattro', and the performance model with the Quattro will be 'SQ6'.

Although yet to be confirmed, reports suggest Audi could continue using the 'RS' prefix for its high-performance models in the future. Audi is also yet to confirm when the powertrain-based numbers will disappear from the entire range.

Florian Hauser, Head of Sales & Product Marketing for EVs at Audi, stated, "When we talk about simplicity we don’t just talk about the options and the configuration process [in contrast to older Audi models, the Q6 has just a handful of option packs to choose from], we are really thinking of getting the leanest engine programme for the Q6 which still refers to our customer demands."
