Delhi: Decision mandating speed governors in cabs put on hold

The Delhi state transport department's decision to make it compulsory for all cabs operating in the city to be equipped with speed governors has been put on hold for the time being. This has likely been done after several taxi unions threatened to launch protests against the state government if the decision isn't rolled back.

The earlier decision to make speed governors mandatory for all cabs in the city was taken in line with a Union Road Transport Ministry's notification. Reports suggest that the Delhi government has now decided to put a hold on the decision and study the Transport Ministry's notification in detail. It will also be looking at what steps other states are taking regarding the notification, before taking a final call regarding the earlier issued orders.

The Delhi transport department's earlier orders were aimed at limiting the maximum speeds of cabs and taxis operating in the city. This was an attempt to minimize the number of cases of over speeding on city roads, and thus limit accidents and fatalities. Taxi unions had claimed that equipping a cab with a speed governor would cost around Rs. 10,000. This would thus be an added financial burden on the driver, who are already suffering from a drop in income due to changing incentive packages of Ola and Uber.
