EV industry sold 1.56 lakh electric vehicles in the FY19-20

The electric vehicle industry in India sold 1,56,000 units in FY 2019-20, showcasing a growth of 20% over the previous fiscal. Out of this, 1,52,000 were 2-wheelers, 3,400 cars and 600 buses. This figure does not include e-rickshaws, which accounted to 90,000 units.

In FY 2018-19, 1,30,000 electric vehicles were sold, which included 1,26,000 two-wheelers, 3,600 cars and around 400 buses.

Out of the total electric 2-wheelers sold in FY 2019-20, 97% were electric scooters, while motorcycles and electric cycles contributed to 3% of the numbers. Low speed scooters with a top speed of 25 km/h constituted to 90% of the total electric 2-wheeler sales.

Fewer electric cars were sold during the FY2019-20 compared to the previous fiscal. The drop in sales can be attributed to lack of bulk purchase and the discontinuation of the leading models.
