Govt. pockets Rs. 65 Cr by giving access to registration data

According to a media report, the Government of India earned Rs. 65 crore by giving restricted access to vehicle registration data. 32 government agencies and 87 private entities were given access to this information.

The Vahan database has registration records of approximately 25 crore vehicles, while the Sarathi database includes 15 crore driving license records.

It has been reported that private entities were provided vehicles details like make, model, colour, number of seats, chassis number, fuel type and names of financiers and insurance companies. It is said that private information about owners was not disclosed.

In March 2019, the government had cleared a policy to sell vehicle registration data. It states that the data can be shared with organizations that are registered in India. Commercial organizations and individuals are charged Rs. 3 crore, while educational institutions are charged a one-time fee of Rs. 5 lakh. State transport departments and police can have free and unrestricted access to the data.
