I have been noticing for quite some time how most two-car households follow a similar buying trend -
1. Having one distinct primary and one secondary car
2. Owning two cars of the same segment
Giving my example, I've always had clear distinction in my family on which car is primary and which is secondary - (Mahindra Scorpio N, Toyota Glanza), (Toyota Innova, Maruti Suzuki SX4), (Hyundai Accent, Maruti Suzuki Zen), etc. On the other hand, taking an example of my cousin, he has always owned two cars of the same segment - (Hyundai Creta, Honda City).
It just makes me curious why different families have a different way of purchasing cars and what influences this decision. Obviously the cost factor can be taken off the table considering a Creta + City combination costs almost in the same ballpark as a Scorpio N + Glanza.
Which brings me to a deeper thought -
What are the advantages of each?
1. Having one distinct primary and one secondary car -
Advantages can probably be the fact that if you know you're going to a place with imperfect roads/traffic/no parking - you know which car to take.
Apart from that a secondary car can be used for beater purposes or giving to the driver to chauffeur kids.
2. Owning two cars of the same segment
Advantages can probably be the fact that you're spoilt with options. Slavia, Verna, take whichever to office you please. To some extent the Indian mindset of having that 'badi car vali feel' with two cars.
Which of the two broad choices does the Team own or prefer and why?
Cheers.
Here's what BHPian saikishor contributed to the discussion:
I have a C1 segment sedan i.e, a Honda Amaze and a B1 segment hatchback, i.e, a Chevrolet Beat. I voted for a distinct primary and secondary, but I think both of my cars more or less belong to the same segment of vehicles. I mean to say there is no major difference between some things such as engine capacity.
Meanwhile, BHPian sunikkat added this to discussion:
Voted for a Distinct Primary and Secondary. For a single driver family I don’t see a merit of having 2 cars of same segment.
Currently I have a 330Li for weekend and highway drives and a i20 IVT for city drives on weekdays to work. Will replace i20 with an EV <25 lakhs OTR as my running is around 250kms in a week.
