KTM developing semi-automatic gearbox for its 1290 Super Duke

While the semi-automatic gearbox is still under development, the part numbers on the drawings match the component numbers of KTM's 1290 range.

KTM is said to have filed patent applications for a new semi-automatic transmission system for its 1290 range. The leaked patent drawings reveal some notable information about the new technology, which could be introduced on the upcoming versions of the 1290 Super Duke & 1290 Adventure.

As per the patent images, the semi-automatic setup is similar to the manual transmission, albeit with the addition of a gearbox lock which could operate as a parking brake, by stopping the transmission from turning. The setup will have an electric motor which will engage the movement again.

KTM could go for an electronic shifter with the input either from a foot lever or a button on the switch cube. Once engaged, the system is expected to perform seamless gearshifts. At low speeds the centrifugal clutch is disengaged from the engine, leaving the bike in neutral, the requirement of the gearbox lock mechanism is of significant importance.

While the semi-automatic gearbox is still under development, the part numbers on the drawings match the component numbers of KTM's 1290 range, indicating which models the tech is oriented towards in the future.
