Rumour: Skoda Rapid Diesel Automatic being readied

Earlier this year we reported that Volkswagen was planning to introduce the Vento sedan with a 1.5-litre diesel engine with an automatic transmission (Link). It appears that the Vento's Czech cousin, the Skoda Rapid will be given the same treatment as well.

At present, the Rapid diesel features a 1.6-litre TDI engine and a 5-speed manual gearbox. According to a report by Zigwheels, this engine will be dropped and in its place, a new 1.5-litre unit producing 104 bhp will be used. It will be mated to a DSG transmission. An optional 5-speed manual gearbox will be available as well. The shift to a smaller engine will make the car eligible for excise benefits and make it more affordable.

The report also claims that the Rapid will not get a facelift, but changes to the interiors are possible. A new steering wheel, styled like the ones in modern Skodas is expected. The car is also likely to gain more equipment.

The Rapid diesel automatic is expected to go on sale in the third quarter of FY 2014-15.
