Scoop! New base variant of the Mahindra Thar in the works

The new variant is expected to come with a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder engine paired to manual and automatic transmissions. Four-wheel drive will not be offered in this variant.

Mahindra is said to be working on an entry-level variant of the Thar.

The new variant is expected to come with a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder engine paired to manual and automatic transmissions. Four-wheel drive will not be offered in this variant. The vehicle could be 100 kg lighter than the current Thar. It could come with lower torque rating and could focus more on fuel efficiency. It is also expected to come with smaller wheels. The dimensions of the new variant are expected to remain the same as the current Thar.

At present, the Thar comes with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder mStallion petrol engine that produces 150 BHP and 320 Nm. It is also available with a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel that makes 130 BHP and 320 Nm. Both engines are available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive with a manual shift transfer case is standard across all variants.
