Skoda could bring back diesel engines in India with next-gen Superb

The new-gen Skoda Superb made its global debut in November last year.

According to a media report, Skoda is likely to reintroduce the diesel engine on the next-generation Superb.

Petr Janeba, Head of International Sales of Skoda Auto, has revealed that the carmaker is exploring the possibility of bringing back its TDI engine to India. The engine will be introduced on the new-gen Superb. While the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine will be locally produced, the diesel version will be imported via the CBU route.

The new-gen Skoda Superb made its global debut in November last year. The sedan is based on the MQB EVO platform and is available with a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains. These include a 1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol with a 48V mild-hybrid system, a 2.0-litre TSI and a 2.0-litre TDI.

Skoda discontinued its diesel engine at the end of the BS4 era. The carmaker had estimated the demand for diesel cars to taper off. However, the market for diesel cars has remained strong, especially in the SUV segment.
