Sporty BMW X3 / X4 variant teased; is it the M40i?

BMW might be gearing up to introduce a top-spec X3 xDrive30d or the M40i variant.

BMW has released a teaser image of what appears to be a sporty variant of the X3 or X4. This has led to speculations that BMW might be gearing up to introduce a top-spec X3 xDrive30d or the M40i variant.

Given the popularity of the M340i, BMW might be looking at launching the X3 M40i in India. The SUV is powered by a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder twin-turbo petrol engine that makes 378 BHP @ 5,800-6,500 rpm and 500 Nm @ 1,800-5,000 rpm. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system.

The less exciting option would be the introduction of a top-spec diesel trim on the X3. The xDrive30d variant is likely to be powered by a 3.0-litre oil burner producing 282 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 650 Nm @ 2,000-2,500 rpm.

At present, the BMW X3 is only offered with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, while the X4 comes with a choice of 2.0-litre petrol and a 3.0-litre diesel.
