Toyota Taisor to be sold as Starlet Cross in overseas markets

The South African-spec model will be powered by the old K15B 1.5-litre engine.

Toyota recently launched the Urban Cruiser Taisor in India. The carmaker is reportedly planning to export the compact crossover to overseas markets, however, under a different brand name.

According to a media report, the made-in-India Urban Cruiser Taisor will be sold in South Africa as the Starlet Cross. It will be offered alongside the Starlet hatchback, which is already on sale in the country.

The South African-spec model will be powered by the old K15B 1.5-litre engine. This unit produces 104 BHP and 134 Nm and will be mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.

In India, the Urban Cruiser Taisor is available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 89 BHP and 113 Nm and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that puts out 99 BHP and 148 Nm. Both engines come with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. While the 1.0L engine gets an optional 6-speed automatic, the 1.2L unit gets a 5-speed AMT option.

The Starlet Cross will be equipped with a similar set of features as the Urban Cruiser Taisor. It will be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant.
