All future Toyota engines to be developed with Gazoo Racing

These four-cylinder engines were confirmed to be in development by Toyota in May 2024.

Gazoo Racing, the performance division of Toyota will have engineering inputs in the development of the carmaker's new range of internal combustion engines.

GR's head and motorsports chief, Bart Eelen confirmed that Toyota’s new range of four-cylinder petrol engines will benefit from GR’s engineering prowess of its racing team and that the engines won’t be limited to just sports cars, but will power regular Toyotas as well.

These four-cylinder engines were confirmed to be in development by Toyota in May 2024.  That was also the year when Toyota announced a joint venture with Subaru and Mazda to develop future ICE, electric, and gas-electric hybrid powertrains. That time, it had hinted that the new four-cylinder engines could power the entire Toyota model portfolio.

There was also speculation that Gazoo Racing was working on a version of this engine aspiring to make it the world’s most powerful four-cylinder engine. One of the engines was teased in a GR Yaris at a motorsport event, which was said to put out 400 BHP.

"We’re in the process of developing a brand-new family of four-cylinder combustion engines with both 1.5 and 2.0-litre capacities," Matt Harrison, Toyota Europe's chief corporate officer said. "These engines will feature new technologies and new thinking. For instance, they will have a shorter piston stroke that allows them to be much more compact. That allows us more freedom for our designers and engineers when it comes to packaging."

The performance versions of these engines are likely to debut first, followed by the rest of Toyota’s lineup. The engines will be detuned for use in regular applications.

Full and hybrid powertrains are also not ruled out, and Toyota is even said to be working on hydrogen combustion versions of these new engines.
