Two things:

1) What is your budget?

2) Understand that video auto-focus on DSLRs (and mirrorless cameras) falls into 3 categories:
a) Non-existant
b) Really really really slow, jerky and noisy
c) Pretty decent

Most DSLRs that shoot video fall into category (a) or (b).

In the Canon DSLR range, only the 70D falls into category (c). Not sure if Nikon/Sony have any DSLRs that fall into (c).

During my research, I came across the entry level Sony A58. What are your thoughts on this camera. Will this suit my above mentioned requirements. Are there any known problems with this?
If video is important do look at the soon to be launched a6000 E mount.
In DSLR world, sony A58 is a very good camera.

@Rehaan, the Sony SLT does very good video. Its not a "traditional" DSLR.

Will check it out, thanks.

Is there any Nikon (DSLR) equivalent to the Canon 70D? (ie. good, smooth auto-focus for video) ?

Nah. Nothing at all. Video AF in all Nikon DSLRs is horrible. If video is important, I would go to Sony or Panasonic. They know video. Its in their DNA.

Re: DSLR Video Discussion

3 days ago, came across an irresistable offer on Amazon. 2 days later I have the solid 600D in my hand. Damages:28K. Well, it might not be exactly what I was looking for but it's a good start. Thank you all for your inputs here.

Re: DSLR Video Discussion

A shoot was going on in Malad. Interestingly, whole shoot was on DSLRs (Canon Full frames with a Huge cache of lenses).

Not sure if it was a movie or TV / Advert, but it was not small-scale. Scene had 4 - 5 actors, 20 odd extras, 50 - 60 crew and it had usual equipment (cranes/ lighting/ reflectors/ vanity vans etc) .

Interesting to see DSLRs getting used for professional video work.

Have you seen this? Created quite a stir when it showed up ~6 years back.

Demo video for the Canon 5D Mk2 showing off its portability + low light + DOF capabilities for videos:

Re: DSLR Video Discussion

I have shot a few videos with my D3300. The experience was fantastic. Here is my view
. There is a 10 minute limit on a single stream, so you have to be creative in choosing when to stop and restart. My friends in Advertising and Cinema have assured me that now a days it is rare to find a single shot of more than ten minutes. Mostly they are 5 minutes or less.
. When shooting at 1080/60 the files are not only large, but over whelm most of the TV hardware. So you have to use software to reduce both the Frame rate and the Audio sampling.
. I use Handbrake and find that output using "Apple 3" preset is perfect for watching on HD TV.
. For stringing and editing clips, I use the Nikon Video editor to create the film and then Handbrake to down size it
