I generally read books in the sci-fi, mystery, suspense genre. Currently, I'm hooked to 'Fear the Worst' by Linswood Barclay. Here's the summary of the book.

Your daughter doesn’t come home one night from her summer job.
You go there looking for her. No one’s seen her. But it’s worse than that.
No one’s ever seen her. So where has she been going every day? And where is she now?

Quite a gripping storyline!

These Russian Books were indeed very good books. We used to buy them from NEW CENTURY Book House in Ooty when we were in school. Very good paper and quality of print and binding etc.
I also remember buying many of those books - Chemistry, Physics, Storybooks including some beautifully illustrated fairy tales and animal stories and stuff.
Most of these I donated some 7-8 years back to the HippoCampus library in Koramangala, along with my entire collection of every single Amar Chitra Katha and so on.
I guess I could have hung on to those books for nostalgia's sake, but I thought that we should allow other children to enjoy them too, if they have such an inclination!

That was a mistake: it is called "The Long Walk - Escape from the Gulag camp and walk to India" by Sławomir Rawicz.

I have "physics can be fun" at my home in jabalpur, will have to bring it next time I go to India. Another book was in hindi called "Saras Ganit"

I read this story as part of a compilation by Readers Digest a long time ago. There are a number of wonderful stories in that compilation, which was titled Great Escapes.

Man, you have tingled a nerve! Such lovely books! I would have read Saras Ganit atleast 30 times. Still remebered the questions in rubles and all. Also - probability of next 100 people crossing being all men, shadow of helicoptor, Circling a rabbit sitting on a tree without seeing its back.. such good theories.

My dad owned a huge library with so many russian books!

Started "The Devotion of Suspect X" at around 10-11 pm, and just finished.

Its a Japanese crime thriller, and a very gripping read.

There was also a small diary sized book, hardback, Blue, with experiments in physics.
Whiled away a lot of time with that!

One book worth reading and to gift to young students, is "One Two Three Infinity" by George Gamow, a famous physicist! A lucidly written masterpiece

In addition to Yakov Perelman, add Short Stories of Chekov, Novels by Gorky, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Turgenev. Got most of their works in beautiful hard bounds.
Most of them I still retain. All of them are more than 25 years old. And off course not to mention the Physics problems book by Irodov and Calculus book by Piskunov!

Gamow has the other series : Mr Tompkins which is also beautifull.
Along with it, there is the text book called Physics : Foundations and Frontiers. A very beautiful book to read.

Current day problem is that students are so busy reading notes and coaching classes, they never get time to read from these ground breaking text books and hence have no catalysts to thinking.
