Let me go on a limb and say that this was THE worst drive I've been part of.
To start with, almost everybody showed up on time, which was surprising in itself. We proceeded to the breakfast point - MTR 1924. Talked a bit and took pictures and then we proceed towards out next checkpoint - Malavalli.
Till Malavalli the roads were good, but then hell opened its gates. We traversed through some really bad roads, took detours. There was confusion about who's leading the pack at times. Avinash, Karthik and myself took turns helping direct the cars in the convoy to take the correct turns (good job chaps) since some of them were trailing behind.
Finally, we reached the resort and looking at the ODO I was bit worried - 175km had become 236km! The bikers were really exhausted, specially Karthik (if you were wondering where all the welcome drinks went, well you didn't hear it from me
). Half of the folks overshot the turn to the resort and joined about half hour later. Once everybody reached people proceed to their respective cottages to freshen and join for lunch.
Lunch was decent, except that our starters went missing, but still good. Rohit, Nishad, Suhaas and myself had to return post lunch since we were day tripping. We ordered coffee (one for the road), said our goodbyes and started back. Rohit led and I followed. We didn't want to take the same route back since it was back breaking I didn't want to get my tires slashed.
We decided to take the Mysore route, longer but better roads. Traversing through some villages and really bad roads, we reached a junction where left was about 230kms to Bangalore (with bad roads) and right was about 175km (with bad roads). We took lesser of the two evils and continued. We would have travelled about 25% of the route when reached a spot where there was a weak bridge and no traffic was being allowed on it.
We back-tracked and were disappointed that we would have to take the route through Talakadu (the longer one). However, when we checked with the locals they said there is another route, shorter and would avoid the bad roads but was about 140kms. I was running out of patience and cooking inside my gear, but we didn't have any choice and decided to proceed on that route. I was dehydrating, so we took breaks and I drank lot of water. The sun was going down and I knew the worst was yet to come - riding at night with the visor open.
Finally were reached Malavalli at about 18:45 hrs and stopped for 10mins (my arse was hurting like hell - it was a whole new meaning to
pain in the arse). I called home and told what happened and that I would be late. We started again and decide to stop at the Cafe Coffee Day on Kanakpura road (close to where we had breakfast). From there on, I rode the bike like I stole it, with Rohit hot on my tail. I had the visor open and kept getting hit with insects of varying shapes and sizes. Some went into my eyes and others got stuck in my balaclava and bit me on the face. The 650 has two headlamps and boy was I grateful for them (those who say the stock lamps on the 650 provide insufficient lighting should have seen it light up the higway).
We reached CCD just past 21:00hrs. Called home, got out of my gear, freshened up and rested my bum. Ah, the feeling was orgasmic. We sat there for an hour or so (my bum needed to recahrge) and then started the final approach. Reached home just after 23:00hrs.
Rohit, Suhaas and Nishad - thanks for watching my back and making sure that I reach home on my bike rather than in an ambulance. Can't thank you guys enough
Two things that really peeved me off:
1. The incident where all the starters went missing during lunch. I was told the group of people enjoying separately took the whole lot. Not cool, that was part of our lunch and nobody got to taste it except for ones in the above mentioned group.
@Sudarsanan sir, your stance on the fact that those starters were part of the buffet lunch and not snacks was absolutely right. I couldn't agree with you more.
2. There were a couple of folks who were driving like morons (you know who you are). The whole idea of going for a drive together is to enjoy the drive not to showcase your machine's prowess. One of you kept sniffing my tail, too close to comfort and another almost ended up in near death situations couple of times. It's one thing to profess safe driving on the forum and another to be driving like maniacs when behind the wheel; I understood it that day. And oh, turn indicators are provided free of charge with your car - make use of them.
A frank suggestion for the next meet - if bikers are joining the drive, please try to ensure its safe for them and tell them so if it's not. Let them decide whether they want to plan their funeral of not.
Now that that's off my chest, let's see some pictures, shall we!
PS: Karthik - I tried calling you to tell you about the return route, but your phone was unreachable. My apologies if you ended up enduring pain like I did.
