Mitsubishi plans to introduce 5 new models in India by 2016

Japanese carmaker, Mitsubishi does not have a noteworthy presence in India. The company sells only two SUV models, the Pajero Sport and Montero in the country. While the Pajero Sport's sales have been dismal compared to its main competitor, the Fortuner, the Montero is struggling to find any customers at all.

Mitsubishi is now trying to turn things around. The company is planning to introduce as many as five new models by the year 2016.

Among the new offerings will be the Mirage hatchback, which will rival the Hyundai i10 and Maruti Celerio. In ASEAN markets, it is powered by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, 77 bhp engine with a choice of a manual or a CVT transmission. Depending on the Mirage's progress, Mitsubishi will introduce the sedan based on it - the Attrage. Initially the cars will be imported into India. Assembly of these vehicles at the Hindustan Motors facility at Chennai is possible at a later stage.

Also in the pipeline are two new SUVs. One of these could well be the new Outlander, which will be brought in as a CBU. This will mean, pricing the vehicle competitively, could pose a challenge.
