Next-gen Tata Sumo to get all-new 'Raptor' platform

Tata Motors has revealed that it will use an all-new lightweight platform to underpin a new range of budget MUVs and SUVs. The new platform, codenamed Raptor, is neither a ladder-on-frame architecture, not a monocoque structure. It uses a new technology called Body Integrated Frame. One of the vehicles that will employ this platform is the next-generation Tata Sumo.

In the Body Integrated Frame platform, the frame will be integrated or welded into the chassis. This allows the manufacturer to choose a stiff, heavy frame for off-road vehicles or a lighter one for car-like SUVs. This could mean that the new Sumo could have optimum stiffness, and at the same time, be lighter and more efficient compared to its rivals.

The current-gen Tata Sumo MUV is almost twenty years old and is still selling at more than 1,000 units per month. It is expected to continue in production for a few more years.
