hi ,
i just picked up a mm550 ngcs . the front track is wider than the rear
track. Is there a plausible explanation for this ,wouldn't it cause a
problem while going through a dirt track.one more thing is it possible
to bring the front track width at par with the rear one by decreasing
the size if the axles. will these modifications in anyway hamper the
driving abilities of the vehicle.
regards.

@Sammy, a large number of vehicles have a wider front track, and it will not be a problem at all. And this is not restricted to FWD or RWD either or to only jeeps / SUV's. I dont think you need to do any modifications.

@sammy:

This is a quirk found in all Mahindra vehicles. If you see a Bolero with off-set alloys, it looks like a lobster about to grab a meal. This has more to do with saving costs to develop a new rear axle/tube assembly by Mahindra.

It is not possible to decrease the width of the front axles without affecting the performance vehicle. The simplest solution is to find one inch spacers at the back.

Tini, I do not think 1 inch spacers at the rear will make the tracks equal. You will require more.

yes they dont want to modify the body design which restricts the rear axle track.
ex
the marshal/armada/bolero rear wheel arch design limits the track to 53".

at the same time MAXX series can accommodate 58" FFRA due to wider body.
i am facing the same problem with my Armada.:Frustrati

the exact size for the spacer that is,
58"-53"=5" so it will be 2 1/2 inch (6.4cm) spacers at both ends.

why didn't you posted the correct size? & you do this all the time spikey :D.

rgds,
Nikhil

@spike: You are correct, 1 inch is not enough, but it looks much less awkard with one inch. I don't feel comfortable with spacers more than an inch hence my suggestion for one inch.

Nikhil, with 2.5" each side the track at rear will slightly become more than front:D.

Front track for NGCS 550 - 1460 +- 10 mm.

Rear track for NGCS 550 - 1355 +- 10 mm.

Oh ok, got the point. I also do not endorse this spacer thingy.

Spike:)

:thumbs up

Me neither!

Can't they use FC van axles?

Thank you friends.I think i will stick to the present setup than modifying the axles and in the bargain end up ruining the differentials.

It's good that you are sticking to the present arrangement.

However, can you please explain how modifying an axle (what mod?) will ruin your differential?

Why do you think this is limited to Mahindra vehilces ? From the specs I have seen of different cars, most have a different track-width (front vs rear).

Let's take Toyota as an example.
Innova & Fortuner - same track width at front & rear
Prius - wider front track
Altis - wider rear track.

So from your comments above, does it mean that Toyota is lazier / quirkier / more into cost-cutting than Mahindra ?

Also, if the rear track-width is shorter, how much effort does it take to extend it make the track width equal ?

Next question(s): why do you think a different track-width is bad ? What problems does it cause ? Why do you want to make it equal ?

you are comparing Altis & Prius with 550 ngcs??
Toyota PriusToyota Corolla Altis
track difference 5 mm
Mahindra Armada/Marshal/bolero/550 (NGCS)
track difference 100 millimeters = 3.93700787 inch

so one needswheel spacer of 1.96850393 inch or 49.9999998 millimeters at both sides.:Frustrati

so in general highway driving the 2 inch track difference will not cause any problems.

but when a jeeps try to cross ditch or small river stream on tree logs the 2 inch track difference is not Ideal.

simple mod will be adding spacer of 2 inch which is not recommended by many gurus.

or installing new wider axle from mm FC ot mm Maxx series with tack of 1500mm (-+10mm).

rgds,
Nikhil

BTW have you driven Armada/Bolero'550 NGCS ?

& tried to avoid potholes while driving one?
result the front tyre avoids it & reat dosent .lol:

Bringing in a twist to the conversation, eh ? I have given 3 examples from the same company to only show that front & rear track does not have to be the same. And also to say that difference in track is nothing to do with the perceived approach of the company.

5 mm =100 mm??? i dont think so.:uncontrol

give me some examples of vehicles with track difference of 100 mm.:D

@condor:

There is a difference in a minor variation of track and 4 inch difference. Can you do some further research and let us know how many vehicles have 4 inch or so difference?

Altis has a 5 mm difference. Do realize the difference between 5 mm & 4 inches?

Prius probably has a minor differnce within a few mm.

Have you seen a Prius or Altis looking like a lobster with alloys?
